⚠ This sender is external to UCL, please take care when accessing any links or opening attachments.
    Dear RDA UK Members,
As you’re no doubt aware, the next RDA plenary is being held virtually from 3-11 November 2021. If you haven’t already, don’t forget to register before the early bird registration ends on 25 October.
The programme is now available and shows confirmed times for breakout sessions. It would be really interesting to know who from the UK is running, co-chairing, or presenting in sessions. If you are, please do share via this list so others, who might also be interested, are aware and so we can get an overview of what RDA work is going on in the UK.
To start things off, I’m co-chairing the National PID Strategies Working Group session “Aligning and coordinating national PID strategies”. This session is on 3 November (Breakout 2) 14:00-15:30 UTC. It’s been repeated on Tuesday 9 November (Breakout 9) 23:00-00:30 UTC.
    Regards,
    Christopher

Dear Members of the RDA Research Data Architectures in Research Institutions IG,
Thanks to those of you who responded to the Doodle Poll. If you didn’t, but would nevertheless like to join the planning meeting for the 17th Plenary, do please feel free to do so – just drop me a line and I will include you in the invitation.
We will have the meeting at 10am UTC on Thursday 17th December (next Thursday). I will set this up via MS Teams, unless anyone has a strong objection to this.
At the meeting we will discuss topics for RDARI to cover, the format of the session, and who we should invite to speak.
If you’d like a reminder about the kind of things in which RDARI is interested, please take a look at https://www.rd-alliance.org/groups/research-data-architectures-research-

Dear Members of the RDARI Interest Group of the RDA,
It may seem as though less than a month has passed since the 16th RDA Plenary in virtual Costa Rica, but already it is time to decide whether and what we would like to propose for hybrid Edinburgh in April. The submission deadline is the 12th January, so I’d like to organize a call to discuss plans. Do please join us if you’d like to get involved – no previous experience necessary!
If you’d like to join the call, please indicate your availability via this Doodle poll:
    https://doodle.com/poll/mqu7xms85df44igq?utm_source=poll&utm_medium=link
Please also bear in mind that we’re a co-chair or two short at present, so any volunteers to join me and Keith would be very welcome. Volunteers representing the Americas, Africa, or Asia would be particularly welcome, although anyone who isn’t me or Keith would help improve diversity.

    Hi Stephan et al.,
As it happens I have put together a poster publicizing the results of the RDARI survey for the IDCC 2020 conference in Dublin. You are welcome to take and re-use any or all of it. The charts and graphs are very much at the ‘quick summary’ level – I’ve not had the chance to really drill down into the data yet. The data can be found at https://doi.org/10.5522/04/10283540.v1
I’ll send the poster file separately so as not to clog up everyone’s in-boxes with big files, but happy to share with anyone who is interested, and will publish shortly under CC0…

    James

    Dear All,

I’ve just realiized that there have been a few more respondents over the past week who are not included in the above list – apologies if that applied to you! We have got those responses safe and sound in the database.

Further apologies to members of those institutions whose names have been mangled by the .csv export from our survey software!

It’s nearing the end of October, and the RDARI survey is still very much open and looking for additional responses. I’d like to thank those institutions that have already submitted responses, and encourage those of you in institutions that have not yet done so. The more responses we receive, the greater the benefit to the community.

Hmm… I see the point. The answer could be hard to me also even if we have quite simple network. Is it possible to ask “maximum data transfer speed”. Real speed is something else, but this maximum is one parameter when organization makes development plans.

    > Happy to add a question about whether infrastructures are shared, but again I’m not sure how best to phrase it in a clear and unambiguous manner. Suggestions?
    Somehting like that?
    – Do your infrastructure is used also by private sector organizations (like SMEs)?
    – If yes, please describe…
    Then about the questionnaire:
    # One proposal for a new question pair:
    – Do your institution offer free of charge stoarege space for researchers or research groups?
    – if yes, how large free space is (in GB)?
    # Few smaller comments about the questions (in
    https://eur01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdocs.g…):
    – Type of institution
Small addition proposals: a) Computing Center => Computing/IT Centre, b) should we add “Research data infrastructure” here? Just in case…
    – Do we need email information? If yes, then we should describe why and how (because GDPR etc.). Of course email information makes possible to identify dublicates etc.
    – Nation
Shoud this be “Country”? Country codes we can get from ISO 3166 standard
    (https://eur01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fen.wik…) or ISO
    3166 alpha 2
(https://eur01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fen.wik…). The latest include also Kosovo (XK) which is missing in the list of the ISO 3166 numeric codes. (I marked this also in to the Google sheet)
    – Total size of institution (staff, students, etc.) Should we define this as a number of the users in the IdM, AD or similar? Is the idea of the question to find the size of the system or local community? If yes, then the scale should be larger than “up to 50,
50- 500, 500 – 5000, more than 5000″ (For example our university have approx. 62000 people in our IdM (incl. students, staff etc.). I propose
scale: up to 1000, 1000-10000, more than 10000.
If we count only researchers or staff, then the original scale is very good.
    – What Research Data Management services are provided at your institution?
Just thought; Could we have here also “Questionnaire tool for surveys/sensitive data surveys”?
    – If so, who is responsible for overall RDM planning and infrastructure management Should we add “library staff”? (Or what is the proper term similar than “IT administrators”?)
    – How many persons are employed to provide the data/RDM service(s) In terms of full-time equivalents (i.e. one person full time = 1)?
    FTE is proper meter here.
    – Who is responsible for defining the overall vision for Research Data Management over 10+ years?
Should we add “library staff”? (Or what is the proper term similar than “IT administrators”?)
    # Missing values
For the questionnaire we have to decide some code book things like how to handle missing values?
For example in one project which I’m helping in data management issues use following definitions for missing values:
    ‐9: No answer
    ‐8: Question was not asked
‐4: Respondent stopped filling out the questionnaire.
    ‐3: Answer is not plausible
    ‐1: Question not posed
    # What next?
I think we can move forward after Philadelphia. I mean that we have good enough question set and we can test it with the real form (which tool we will use?).
Then we have to finalize codebook base on current work and prepare ourselves to analyze the data. Then we need to find addresses of potential audience.
… but let’s discuss also this tomorrow 🙂
    BR,
    Ville

    Dear James and dear all,
great job! I fixed some typos and I have a couple of comments:
    – On the data infrastructure part, maybe could be of some interest a detailed question on the connection speed, because this can give an idea of how the system has the potential to be enlarged, or if the workload is not well supported.
    – Could it be useful a question on how they arrange (or if they have) a particular data policy in the case the infrastructure is also used by SME (small medium enterprices)?
    My best regards,
    Rossella

    Greetings RDARIANS,
I’m pleased to say that I’ve finally got around to updating the draft Governance Survey to match the controlled vocabularies being used (so far) by the Open Questionnaire for Research Data Sharing Survey Interest Group (where appropriate). I’ve also added a new question about how institutions fund their research data management infrastructures.
If you’d like to add any comments or suggestions for improvement, the draft survey is at https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/14ykmcqUi3LmpthpFzdlhV8yDQibPtiYG…. The latest version is on the ’22 Feb’ sheet.

    Thanks Ingeborg,
Whilst there are obvious differences between the audiences and focus of questions between the RDARI survey and the questionnaire to which you refer, yours looks clear and well designed, and I’d be happy to edit our draft survey so that our phrasing is harmonized where appropriate. Your controlled vocabularies for responses also make a lot of sense and I’d be happy to re-use these.
Ville, Keith, are you happy for me to come up with a new version of our RDARI survey that is better harmonized with the ‘Open Data’ survey?
Ingeborg, are you planning on building a repository of RDM questionnaires? Is there anything that we could contribute by way of metadata that would help? If you are aware of any guidelines or standards that your IG is going to encourage people to use in future, please let me know.

    Dear James,
Thank you for email, and good that you contact us. We have listed your name to be informed of our further activities.
As a new IG, we are still seeking our mode of operation a bit. In other words, finding out where our added value is.
Coming back from Gaborone we also realised that we could have a strong RDA internal role as well.
So your survey really is the first internal action to be taken!
I had a quick look at your survey questions, and although we haven’t developed core modules as yet, there are a number of more general questions that overlap with previous work we did, such as on the type of data, the file size, who is doing what and so forth.
It would be good to harmonize the language there, so at this point in time, the best thing to do, is refer you to the questions and results of the open data survey (2017) that are openly accessible: http://dx.doi.org/10.17632/bwrnfb4bvh.1
By looking at the results, you can see how the answers were back in 2016, so that you can compare and do some benchmarking, if you wish.
Hope this is of any help.
We plan to populate our RDA-IG site with more information soon.
If you need any more information, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Subject: [questionnaire] A questionnaire from the Research Data Architectures in Research Institutions IG
Dear Open Questionnaire for Research Data Sharing Survey IG co-chairs,
I attended the Questionnaire IG at Gaborone and was interested by the proposed work of the group, finally getting around to joining today. We’ve been putting together a questionnaire of our own in the RDARI IG that we would like to launch in early 2019 if possible. The idea behind our survey is to:
    * Compare policies and practicalities between institutions
    * Understand the state of the art when it comes to institutional architectures to support research data management
    * Facilitate contacts between institutions using similar technologies and solutions
    * Getting ideas on what works well
    * Mapping developments over time
    * Getting a sense of the range of services that institutions are providing to support good research data management
I enclose a draft copy of the questionnaire, although it is likely to evolve further before we start seeking responses.
How best should we coordinate our group’s survey so as to fit with the aims of the Questionnaire IG?
    Yours,
    James

    James A J Wilson,
Co-Chair of the Research Data Architectures in Research Institutions IG,

It’s looking as though I too may be struggling to join the meeting at 11. Windows 10 is updating itself – for 45 minutes now and counting.
