Dear Blockchain Applications in Health WG members, Happy New Year!
As you know, our session proposal for the next RDA P15 was accepted, and we are now looking forward to get ready for it and complete the “Comprehensive Guidelines on Blockchain Applications in Health” we aim to deliver as WG output.
We would like to have a couple of TCs with you before P15 in March, to discuss how to adapt the “decision tree” scheme provided (BLOCKCHAIN ADOPTION EVALUATION FRAMEWORK, https://www.rd-alliance.org/blockchain-adoption-evaluation-framework) to your specific use cases, and include it in the final output.
Please, select your preferred options by Friday, 24 January, in the doodle at the following link: https://doodle.com/poll/gp7yydgskvs89ifc.
    Looking forward to meeting you!

proposal for a session at Plenary 15 in 2020.
    We are happy to advise
you that your session proposal “Comprehensive Guidelines on Blockchain

    TAB has
some suggestions below for how you could improve your session. Please
update the session description accordingly to provide the best
    information for potential attendees.
    Suggested improvements:

    Agenda timings are required
    – Reference material related to the actual
content (working documents etc) to be provided
    – The guidelines should
be made available before the session, with a message on the WG and
Health IG mailing lists inviting for comments in reply to the message
and a link from the session web page
    – More time has to be available
    for discussion
    – Check that the WG output is fully discussed at RDA

    Dear all
thanks to those who could attend the TC, we had a fruitful exchange of ideas and addressed some first experiences/use cases that will be further discussed in Philadelphia.
We agreed that a good starting point for our WG session will be to share use cases and experiences or evaluations from participants, so please if you have use cases/experiences to share, let us know or get ready with a short presentation if you wish to.
It will be of great value to collect your views in order to prepare the state of the art report.
Looking forward to meeting you in Philadelphia.
    Best regards

Oggetto: [healthdata] 2017 Call for RDA Fellows
    Good morning Health Data Leadership:,
My name is Joe Webb and I am a doctoral student at Iowa State University in
an integrative PhD program applying Bioinformatic techniques to Big Data
across multiple disciplines (Genetics, Neuroimaging, Metabolomics,
Proteomics, Clinical Health Data, Psychological Cognitive Data).. I
recently joined the Research Data Alliance because I primarily work with
big health data to understand genetic underpinnings of neurodegenerative
diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. In addition to
research, I work with national legislators in Washington DC and Iowa
legislators to advocate for Big Data research initiatives and would love to
know how I can promote the RDA while I am at the nation’s capital in March.
I want to become more involved in the Health Data interest group and I am
very interested in attending the upcoming conference in Barcelona. Are
there any volunteer opportunities that I may become involved with to serve
the RDA and our interest group?
After exploring more ways to become involved with the RDA, I discovered the
call for US RDA fellowship applications. I will be submitting an
application and I would love to discuss project proposal ideas with you
that could assist the Health data interest group in achieving our mission
while enhancing the big data research infrastructure here at Iowa State
University. My training stems from a strong background in Biostatistics,
Biochemistry and Software Engineering for Big Data analysis. This training
makes me uniquely suited to apply for the Data Share Program Fellowship to
extend the collaborative projects that our lab is working on with other
scientists in the US, United Kingdom and Australia.
For my application, I would love to propose a collaborative project to
bolster the big data initiatives I have been helping establish here at Iowa
state University that would simultaneously facilitate our interest group’s
progress toward our goals. As a member of the Midwest Big Data Hub, I am
developing Big Data educational workshops for hundreds of high school
students and undergraduates across Iowa and would love to utilize these
resources to develop integrative projects through the Research Data
    Alliance.
If anyone would be available to discuss potential ideas or has any
questions, comments or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me via
    email at ***@***.***.
I would appreciate hearing from you and discussing this opportunity
further. Thank you for your time and I hope that you have a fantastic day!
    Sincerely,
    Joe Webb

    Dear Lorinette
thank you for your interest in our IG and for sharing your project with us. We would like to know more!
If you’re planning to attend RDA P9 in Barcelona that will be a great occasion to meet and introduce you to the group’s activities, as much as to know more in detail about your project.
Anyway we may also have a talk about it in the next TC we’re planning to have in March, to focus a little bit more again on the “mapping the domain” activity, and that Leslie is kindly helping to organise. Let’s use the TC as a first occasion to get in touch, please coordinate with Leslie and us to start finding suitable dates before setting a doodle.

Oggetto: [healthdata] 2017 Data Share Program Fellowship Applicant
    Dear Health Data IG Leadership:
I am a PhD student studying Health Outcomes Research at Saint Louis
University with research interests in utilizing social media data for
predicting patient reported outcomes such as Health-related Quality of Life
(HrQoL). HrQoL, a concept that embodies the patients’ perception of their
own health, is a dynamic and robust measure for evaluating disease burden
and the quality of health care overall. Traditionally, these measure are
provided via surveys and are expensive to implement. However, patients
express similar and arguably more detailed information about how they
perceive their health on Social media, a much cheaper and more accessible
potential source of patient reported outcomes. Harnessing the power of
machine learning and natural language processing provides an opportunity to
explore social media data for its ability to reliably predict HrQoL and
    much more.
After speaking about this research interest with my mentor, Dr. Leslie
McIntosh, I was introduced to the Data Share Program. My training in
    Epidemiology,
Biostatistics, Health Outcomes Research, and Data Science places me in a
unique position to further explore the validity of social media data as a
reliable source of HrQoL information. The Data Share Program Fellowship is
the perfect opportunity for me (with collaboration from researchers across
the world) to examine the advantages, shortcomings, and potential
recommendations for this type of research in addition to working to solve/
discuss some of its inherent problems, such as those relating to bias and
    security.
I am optimistic that you are excited about social media data as an option
for making medicine more personalized and patient-centered. I hope that you
find my project to be one that you would like to lend your support.
At your availability, I would like to learn more about this IG and discuss
    my proposed project.
I hope to hear from you soon.
    Sincerely,
    Lorinette Wirth

Oggetto: [healthdata] Health Data IG P9 Barcelona – next TC
    Dear all,
As we agreed during our 1st TC last December, here we come to propose another TC in view of the forthcoming P9 in Barcelona.
First of all, we’re pleased to inform you that all the three sessions we talked about in the last TC were submitted and approved.
    This means that we are going to have our Health Data Interest Group session, titled “Meaningful Health Data for Research and for Industry”, on THUR 6th APRIL, 14.00-15.30;
    Secondly, we will have a joint session IG Big Data and IG Health Data, which will serve as Exploration Meeting (Morris Riedel as reference person), on THUR 6th APRIL, 11.30-13.00;
Thirdly, we will have a BoF session on “Making use of Blockchain in dealing with Health Data” on FRI 7th APRIL, 9.00-10.30.
In the meanwhile, Leslie McIntosh has been devoting some remarkable effort to starting the “mapping the domain” activity, which emerged as a specific field of interest during the TC we had in December. Leslie has very kindly taken the initiative of organizing two TCs (on EU-friendly and Australia-friendly times) some of us were able to join in January.
So, our next proposed HD-IG TC will focus on:
    • Health Data IG involvement in Barcelona
    • Mapping the domain: next steps
Please, feel also free to submit other topics of discussion for this TC agenda.
The doodle poll will be available until Friday, 17th February, at this link:

    Dear Chang,
I’m really sorry for my late reply but we’ve been overwhelmed by the submission of a project proposal and I couldn’t think about any other things!
Thank you very much for your kind reply, and for the interest you showed about being part of the process of this new Interest Group on Health Data. I’ll be back to you next week with further details on our initiatives, possibly looking for your participation at the meeting in Denver next September (the date proposed for our session is saturday 17th Sept. in the morning). Your involvement in the process would really add great value to our ideas and intentions.

Oggetto: Re: [healthdata] RDA Health Data Interest Group – Revised Charter
    Dear Ludovica,
    Good to meet you virtually!
As Edwin may have informed you, I am a pediatric cardiologist with a
strong interest in data science and AI. I am graduating from the
Stanford School of Medicine Masters program in Data Science this week
and will continue my work in AI there. I am also the founder of the
international Society for Pediatric Innovation (iSPI) and we have a
working group on data and data sharing as well as a scientific committee
on artificial intelligence. We already have 28 charter members and more
will be joining. Also, I am organizing a course as well as a textbook in
data science and AI in healthcare and medicine.
I am very interested in being part of this process you have elucidated.
Lets chat about how we can converge!
    Best,
    ACC

    Dear all,
On behalf of the co-Chairs of the proposed Health Data Interest Group
(HDIG), please find some updates on the group’s work after the BoF
session held at the Tokyo plenary on 1st March 2016.
This meeting followed a BoF held in Paris at P6, in September 2015,
where the HDIG was encouraged to go for the RDA formal submission and
review process, and a first TAB review which led to an updated charter
presented during the BoF in Tokyo.
The session in Tokyo was also attended by the co-Chairs and/or members
from other groups with potential link with the HDIG, such as Data
Security and Trust Working Group (WGDST) and the RDA/NISO Privacy
Implications of Research Data Sets WG, who were warmly invited to join
the session to discuss potential overlaps and collaborations.
We are now looking forward to complete the review process by the end of
June and to plan for a first meeting of the newly-instituted HDIG at the
8th RDA Plenary in Denver, in September 2016.
To succeed in the review process and actively engage in the group, some
actions are needed: first of all, an updated charter has been prepared
taking into account the latest recommendations and comments received
during the community and the TAB review. This includes a selection of
priority topics the IG will start to focus on, and a major involvement
of worldwide participants in the group, as much as participants with
    clinical expertise.
Please, have a look at the revised Charter, now available at
    https://rd-alliance.org/group/health-data/case-statement/health-data.html.
We would very much appreciate receiving any comments, or suggestions of
editing the content within the end of August 2016, as well as further
indications of potentially interested partners, which it would be
    worthwhile to try and engage.
We are also submitting a session proposal for the 8th RDA Plenary in
Denver, in September 2016, where we would like to invite you.
Preliminary information on the event can be found at
    https://rd-alliance.org/plenaries/rda-eighth-plenary-meeting-denver-co.
    With best regards,
    Ludovica Durst, Ph.D.
