    The EarthCube Liasion Team continues to be interested in collaborating with the RDA Mapping the Landscape IG and hope that some of the attendees at this BOF can report at one of the upcoming Liasion Team telecons. Unfortunately I have a conflict and will not be able to attend P10 but look forward to hearing from some of you that will be attending. Thanks!

    Thank you very much for attending and reporting back, Peter. Sounds like there is a lot the two groups can learn from each other and sustaining a connection would be a definite positive.
    Best,
    Rowena

    Subject: Re: [landscape-mapping] Health Data IG Mapping activity – telecoms tomorrow
    Hi All,
    Sorry for the delay in reporting. Travel and proposal writing season…
    I attended the Health Data Mapping Telecon on 31 January @ 14:00 GMT.
    The meeting was led by Leslie Macintosh and attended by six others. It was a relatively short call of approximately forty minutes.
    The group is in the very early stages of development and their activities. Initial conversation focused on the need for fundamentals such as a definition of “health data” (TBD).
    They have not yet made decisions around tools for data collection, modeling or visualization beyond establishing a Google Sheet that documents a number of entities/topics:
    * Objectives
    * Links
    * Organizations
    * Tools
    * Analytics
    * Domains
    * Standards
    * Rigor and Reproducibility
    At present, they are working to identify various sub-fields/domains (e.g. diagnostics, oncology etc.) and related data types (e.g. results of tests, radiology, lab results).
    There was discussion of working to identify (map) data repositories, which certainly seems relevant to our interests and emerging efforts. In their field, they are already using some advanced techniques such as Natural Language Processing that could be applied to this type of work through analysis of journal articles.
    There was extensive discussion related to the participants’ individual medical fields that was mostly beyond my level of knowledge.
    The call concluded with an indication that they will be moving forward, dividing tasks amounts the group members, and further clarifying tasks and next steps.
    I took the opportunity to introduce myself and to provide an outline of the Landscape Mapping IG, its activities and goals, and made it clear that there appeared to be strong connections between their work and ours. They were very interested in the LM activity and particularly in sharing with respect to technologies, methods etc..
    My sense is that we have a good starting point for collaboration. Clearly they have a some very domino specific needs/activities, so I suspect that they would retain a Health Data Mapping group, however it seems that at minimum it would be productive to have one of the team present on the LM IG.
    I have some additional detail, however I thinking that the summary above addresses the key points.
    Kind regards,
    Peter

    Unfortunately this is 1.00 am my time and I have just done a 3.00 –5.30 am this morning already, and I am not sure I am up to it!
    Is anyone able to participate – they key thing that would be good to know what methodology they are deploying to gather the information and then how they propose visualising and disseminating it.
    Take care

    Subject: [landscape-mapping] Health Data IG Mapping activity – telecoms tomorrow
    Hi Landscape Mapping (soon-to-be) IG,
    The Health Data IG is hosting two telecons tomorrow (31 Jan) across hemisphere-friendly timezones (1400 GMT, 2300 GMT) to discuss a new ‘Health Data Mapping’ activity. I thought that the Health mapping ideas sound very complimentary to this group’s interests, and might even help build some momentum for the P9 kick-off meeting? If anyone from the group is available and/or interested in the Health Data Mapping activities, those group chairs have extended an invitation to you. The call-in details are below for the two calls.
    Many thanks!

    Thank you, Leslie! I think the P9 draft is shaping into an accurate reflection of the priorities that the group has been discussing.
    I have shared a few words with Lynn and Steve about how to organize ourselves internally, and have been pondering your comment about getting “horizontal” with MoL activities (you can see my acronym preference is MoL, too).
    To that end, I have created a VERY raw draft of a survey try to see exactly who and the type and scope of projects we’re dealing with. Input is appreciated from anyone who wants to give it. Please feel free to edit and add terms to lessen the freeform text answers on this first attempt at herding cats.

    Subject: [landscape-mapping] Proposal for MoL IG meeting at Barcelona
    Dear all
    I am just back from the Christmas New Year break and realise that proposal for a session at Plenary 8 in Barcelona needs to be in by the 10 – i.e. In 4 days time.
    I have heavily edited the initial proposal mainly because it was a copy of the P8 BoF proposal and I felt we had moved on a bit, particularly after the meeting at AGU in December.
    I am trying to keep it to a page, but wow – you all had so many suggestions it got pretty hard to know what to put in, and whether the generalisations cover specific issues that people raised.
    Can you have a look at it? Please feel free to hack and trash it as you please and if you think there are more important topics please put them in. Remember it should not be more than a page…
    We also need to decide if we are MLT or MoL – I like MoL as it rolls of the tongue….
    https://docs.google.com/document/d/1u3idk8xaRYkO0Tb1ldjaJrjfejKYuRCBRUeX
    I will do more work on the IG case statement, but as a priority I think we need to get this P9 doco done first. (the case statement is on https://docs.google.com/document/d/1_BaeQCs2GFc0WIdwlRcKgxrhK8yzb7yqnetD… )
    Maybe what we could do is have a near complete draft that we present at Barcelona
    Finally: Lindsay, Peter, Steve, Justin, Ari, Wenbo, Paul, Andrew, Stefanie, Marshall, Helen, Danie – you have not as yet signed up as members of the RDA group. If you want to continue to get emails, can you please sign up to the MoL group on https://www.rd-alliance.org/groups/mapping-landscape – otherwise I am manually adding you as you have been on MoL emails, and I am not sure whether you want to continue to be part of this group…
    Over to you
    Take care
    Lesley
