Sandra GesingMemberDear all,
we looked at the times for our two sessions and we are planned for Breakout
1 and Breakout 10. We have a large community also in the Americas and these
two breakouts are both bad for the Americas. Breakout 1 would be great for
Europe and Australia but we would like to switch Breakout 10 for Breakout
8. This breakout would fit well for the Americas and Europe.
Thanks,
Sandra

Sandra GesingMemberDear all,
Many thanks for the great news! The idea with the overlap of the topic of
the WG and the IG was to address topics in the IG which won’t be addressed
by the WG session but to inform each other since the WG is under the
umbrella of the IG. The goal of the IG is to have discussions beyond
FAIRness of VREs that could spin out a further WG addressing trust in and
critical thinking about results in VREs when using novel technologies such
as AI and VR. We mention FAIRness to address that this is one aspect for
increasing trust but we think it is not enough to make VREs fair to achieve
trust and avoid “blind trust”. We aim at discussing the balance between
trust and critical thinking.
Does that sound okay? Should we maybe change the title?
Thanks,
Sandra

do you plan for the call on Tuesday or Thursday? The email says Tuesday, 5
May, while the timezone converter shows Thursday, 7 May. Just to make
sure;-)

Sandra GesingMemberDear Alex,
that is what I meant that the terms are used differently in communities and
people feel different about the terms VREs/SGs/VLs;-)
We probably can agree that the goal is almost always the same of such
systems: to provide the digital working environment needed for
research/teaching in a way that it makes research and the use of computing
and data infrastructures easier and more self explanatory under
consideration of sustainability, reproducibility and usability.
I certainly agree that different communities connect with each term diverse
concepts. The question is more whether we would like to work towards
emphasizing the similarities between the systems. This does not hamper to
use the different terms and feeds the preferences of communities and
funding bodies. As Lesley said: funding bodies are important factors in the
communication and they like to see their naming. But discussions at RDA and
eResearch Australia between diverse communities elucidated that the goal of
the systems is almost always the same.
So my question is more whether it is then important to have different
definitions or whether it would be beneficial to find a definition all
communities feel their terms rightly addressed.
Thanks,
Sandra

Sandra GesingMemberHi Leonardo, all,
your paper provides a good overview.
Another good resource for publications in this field are the yearly special
issues on science gateways we jointly organize between the yearly US
science gateway workshop series, IWSG (International Workshop on Science
Gateways) and IWSG-A (International Workshop on Science Gateways –
Australasia).
The one for 2015 is under review at the moment but here you can access the
one from 2014.
http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/cpe.3615/full
IWSG 2016 takes place in Rome in June and the deadline for abstracts and
papers is approaching on 20 March (we will extend it by two weeks though
because of the Horizon2020 deadlines;-)
https://sites.google.com/a/nd.edu/iwsg2016/home
This might be a good opportunity to meet and exchange ideas and we
encourage everyone to submit an abstract or paper, of course. We will
distribute again a CFP over the weekend and it would be great if you would
forward it to the mentioned projects such as BLUEBridge and other groups
you would assume that they are interested.
Thanks,
Sandra
