    Short introduction describing the scope of the group and if any previous activities
    Instruments, such as sensors used in environmental science, DNA sequencers used in life sciences, or laboratory instruments used for medical research, are ubiquitous and fundamental to most fields of science. The ability to unambiguously refer to and describe an instrument instance, link the instance with instrument type as well as with the broader context in which the instrument operates is critical, especially for automated processing of such contextual information and for the interpretation of generated data. The PIDINST WG aims to apply persistent identification to instrument instances and develop a community driven metadata schema and recommendation for implementing persistent identification of instruments in existing PID infrastructure. A first version of the schema was presented and discussed at P12.

    Meeting objectives
    The primary objective is to discuss the schema and obtain feedback from the community. Furthermore, we will discuss schema adoption by PID infrastructure. We encourage operators of PID and laboratory infrastructure and to present their perspectives on adoption and implementation. We will also discuss ways towards integration of the schema by instrument database providers.
     
    Meeting agenda
    The draft agenda consists of the following parts and may be subject to change (an update will be provided ahead of the plenary):
     
    * Brief introduction to PIDINST WG, including update on activities since P12 (10 min, Rolf Krahl)
    * Presentation of the revised second version of the metadata schema, including example implementation examples in XML/JSON (10 min, Rolf Krahl)
    * Moderated panel on schema adoption in a PID infrastructure (30 min, Britta Dreyer [DataCite], Ulrich Schwardmann [ePIC], Tobias Weigel [B2HANDLE], moderated by Rolf Krahl)
    * PIDINST integration in instrument databases (10 min, Thomas Proffen)
    * Open discussion (30 min, Ulrich Schwardmann)

    Researchers and experts managing or working with instruments as well as representatives of PID infrastructure providers, institutional providers of instrument databases, instrument manufacturers, data centers.
