Group(s) submitting the application:

Harmonised terminologies and schemas for FAIR data in materials science and related domains WG

Meeting objectives:

Meeting agenda:

  1. [5 min] Present overview of WG: objectives, planned outcomes, working streams
  2. [5 min] Present review of related activities, groups, initiatives (across RDA and beyond)
  3. [5 min] Collect points from attendees regarding related activities, groups, initiatives (across RDA and beyond), any missing ones etc, for discussion in the facilitated working session (Point 6 on agenda).
  4. [10 min] Present review of initial preparatory work (existing resources, best practices)
  5. [10 min] Present key definitions/clarifications (e.g., difference between FAIR maturity indicators for semantic assets vs. datasets)
  6. [55 min] Facilitated working session with active attendee participation to further goals of WG. In particular: discuss items from Point 3 above, working stream detailed activities and identify who will actively contribute to which of the streams.

Target Audience:

Group chair serving as contact person:

Zachary Trautt

Brief introduction describing the activities and scope of the group:

The focus of the WG is on increasing uptake of the FAIR Principles in materials research (in particular in connection with Interoperability and Reusability), supported by improved resources, in particular widely-agreed and FAIR terminologies, metadata and ontologies. While the main focus of the WG is in the material sciences, close interactions with cognate domains, in particular chemistry, are crucial in order to avoid conflicting approaches and also to utilise and integrate with already existing semantic artefacts and resources in these fields.

The group brings together activities and initiatives related to FAIR data in materials domains from many European countries, EU project, and initiatives in the US, Korea and Japan. There are currently 34 members registered via the RDA site.

Short Group Status:

The Working Group has just undergone community review and is awaiting TAB comments and hopefully approval. There have been a previous BoF at P20 which discussed the scope and a presentation of the Case at P21. The group received support of the RDA Tiger Scheme and Group Chairs and Members have been meeting online a few times.
