Vocabularies and Ontologies for drones

    Dear sUAS RDA community,
There’s going to be a VOCamp
    (Vocabularies
and Ontologies hackathon/workshop) next month that chance has seen to
ontologies for sUAS data being accepted as a topic for work (github repo
). Given this group has talked about the need
for VO for sUAS data it looks like this maybe a good opportunity to make
    some tangible prototype steps forward.
It’s takig place in Washington DC USA but we’d welcome input from anyone
either at the event or prior. And we’re keen to schedule a sUAS specific
planning telecon if anyone would like to join then to comment, or you can
just email the list obviously too.
The current loose plan is to start with the modular oceanography ontology
    Geolink (paper pdf
    ) as a starting
point, and to work through 3 domain representative scientific sUAS data
pipelines. We hope doing so will (a) leads towards the goal of defining
draft minimum (meta)data requirements and a way of capturing them, and (b)
will expose where we may need any new VO components.
    *Details:*
    Planning telecon : 16 November,
    9pm UTC
VOCamp: Department of Interior, Washington DC, 28-29 November.
    Regards,
    Jane
P.S Just to say again anyone here is always welcome to use this list to
advertise other similar events/papers that this community would find
helpful! Lacking any global co-ordinated effort, ideally RDA would enable
less repetition and faster solutions to our current challenges.

Jane, all – just a quick note. Be very careful to align with professional organisations (eg ASPRS, ICMS) when choosing how to describe data.
ideally the existing airborne observation communtiy can benefit from this community, so vocabs/ontologies should pay regard to existing ways of describing things. this strategy also ensures that ‘research data’ are more widely useful. I will see if I can make time to have a look at what’s around and ways to integrate things that exist already. Vocabs and ontologies are usually in my too hard basket, but I think this is important 😉
thnx – I won’t be at the meeting, I might be able to make the telecon. So those are my two cents just in case.
