Jean Bernard MinsterMemberThis is a very interesting article. It touches on almost all the sensitive issues.
An idea: Might we get one of the people mentioned —or someone else— as an invited speaker at IDW.

Simon HodsonMemberSo this relates to the previous suggestion of doing something on the recent NEJM editorial http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMe1516564
It would be a good idea, in my view. A cluster of possible names as well as those listed in the piece.
John Wilbanks
Atul Butte
Michael Eisen
Ewan Birney
Best wishes,
Simon.

Mark ParsonsMemberMaybe we can get Joe Biden to speak. Seriously. I’ve met the US Chief Data Scientist who might be able to get on Biden’s radar. It’s a long shot but a worthy shot. Any other connections we can follow?
Regardless of the final participants. I thin a “great debate” on the ethics of data sharing would be marvelous.
cheers,
-m.

Mustapha MokraneMemberDear Bernard, Mark, Simon, All,
Dear Claudia,
The NEJM op-ed and the
Politico paper on Biden’s cancer initiativereally
point to a necessary debate/dialogue on ethics of data sharing and in
particular for health data. This should be A—if not THE—central part of the
International Data Forum. It is a timely opportunity to add a human
dimension to data sharing and build empathy for the cause: human lives
depend on data sharing! This could also help change the still prevalent
perception that open data sharing is an exclusively technological challenge
or a nuisance added on top of researchers.
It would be fantastic to recruit Joe Biden as our keynote speaker for IDW.
Together with Mark and Sandy, we pitched the event to DJ Patil at AGU and
it could be a good follow up to contact him with this proposal. If we cant
get to him, the names suggested by Simon (John Wilbanks, Atul Butte,
Michael Eisen, and Ewan Birney) all seem good as well.
I am adding Claudia to the discussion as she might have additional
suggestions or connections. Claudia is invited to be on the IDW Programme
Committee and her expertise on health data sharing and ethics is very
relevant to the topic.
Best wishes.
Mustapha
