Dear Colleagues,
We are currently organising a session titled “Data Professionals: Bridging the Gap between Educational Provision and Workforce Requirements” at the SciDataCon 2018 (5-8 November in Gaborone, Botswana). The conference is part of the International Data Week and co-located with the next RDA plenary. We would like to invite you to participate in the session with a lightning talk and/or a poster.
We would like to hear about educational/training approaches and about efforts to establish what skills and competencies are needed to succeed in the different roles and professional settings data professionals are working in. The session will contain a number of short lightning talks and will leave room for exchange and discussion. Proposals can be submitted via the general call for papers with the deadline of 31.5.2018: https://www.scidatacon.org/IDW2018/sessions/225/
Since we are not looking for full papers, participation can be on top of any other contribution you are planning to make to SciDataCon 2018.

Traits that make the most productive data professional (in no particular order), and my spin on exactly what each one references:

Interested
Curious
Self-motivated
Open-minded and flexible
Imaginative
Methodical
Analytical
Familiar with data

As a data scientist, your job is to research things. Why would it be different when it comes to presentation? You have to know exactly who you will talking to because that will set the tone of your speech.

So question number one: who is your audience?

So to deliver an engaging presentation, go one level deeper and turn your data into a story.

keep this rule with visualization: 1 slide = 1 chart + 1 sentence. Done.

Great delivery – The simpler the better (again)

There is one thing that many professionals misunderstand when they get on the stage. They think they have to prove that they are good at what they do. So they use a lot of technical jargon, they skip over basic concepts, they never miss an opportunity to highlight the complexity of their profession and how deeply they understand the topic.

Turn it into a discussion

So I suggest the same to you: try to make your one-way presentation more discussion-like! Try to involve your audience: ask questions, listen to their reactions and react appropriately. and make it resourseful.
