Short introduction describing the scope of the group and if any previous activities
The IG Digital Practices in History and Ethnography works to advance data standards, practices and infrastructure for historical and ethnographic research, contributing to broader efforts in the digital humanities and social sciences. We seek to advance development of digital infrastructure for historical and ethnographic research through engagement with concrete scholarly practice and projects, and to advance conceptualization of the special characteristics and digital potential of humanities and qualitative social science data.

Meeting objectives
Over the last five years, the Digital Practices in History and Ethnography has convened a series of discussions (at RDA plenaries and as webinars) to understand data sharing practices, infrastructure and challenges in the empirical humanities (including history, anthropology, ancient studies, and other fields that collect, curate, analyze and interpret empirical data, using primarily qualitative methods and humanities theory). We have learned about diverse data types and practices, empirical humanities projects, and institutional settings in which these project operate. In this session, we will present a vision for what we have come to see as the infrastructure needed to support the overall domain – what we have called RICH: Research Infrastructure for Collaborative Hermeneutics. The envisioned infrastructure will have social, technical, cultural and legal components, addressing the need for physical digital space, technical services, open source tools, data sharing protocols, data ethics, data education, and so on – and the need for governance of the infrastructure itself.

Target audience
All are welcome, but the session will be especially relevant for people interested in the special research infrastructure needs of the digital humanities, especially the empirical humanities (ethnography, oral history, folklore, etc.), and the qualitative social sciences.
