    Dear All,
We had described a number of geoscience discovery use cases in the CINERGI project – see https://github.com/CINERGI/UseCases – these might be added to your compilation.
I’d also like to add some thoughts on the description of data-related roles in the last minutes, specifically on the
    “Data aggregator/data repository/metadata catalogue:
is responsible for running a data discovery service for human & machine, such as
DataCite, DataOne, RDA (Research Data Australia), and data.gov etc. Generally, a
data aggregator isn’t responsible for describing data (i.e. creating metadata), but
may communicate with data providers what attributes a metadata should have to
    make it more discoverable.”
Perhaps we can distinguish between two types of metadata aggregators: A) aggregators that prescribe a metadata access protocol and encoding standard that they can harvest. For example, CUAHSI HIS Central harvests metadata from HydroServers, which all “speak” WaterML/WaterOneFlow services. In this “pure metadata aggregation” case, no additional metadata is created, indeed. B) aggregators that harvest heterogeneous metadata, and “add value” by creating metadata to support additional modes of search. Creating metadata in this case may be inevitable – unless the aggregator only falls back to metadata fields that are common across the harvested repositories (the least common denominator approach). I consider CINERGI an aggregator of this second type because it includes a metadata augmentation pipeline that generates keywords with references to ontology classes, spatial extents, etc. to enable faceted browsing by characteristics not explicitly present in the harvested metadata (ie enables additional modes of search, and adds support for semantic interoperability). Obviously, there may be multiple value-add aggregators for the same data sources, to enable different additional search capabilities.

    Dear Ilya,
Thank you for the feedback; I’ve already had a quick look at the use cases
and I think they can be easily incorporated into our compilation.
Regarding the description of the Data Aggregator role, I think it would make
sense to keep the differentiation but probably on a different level; i.e.
keep the high level “general” roles as they are currently stated, and then
produce a hierarchy below them that can be used when this level of
granularity is necessary. In any case, we can definitely discuss this
further either on the mailing list or at our next call.

    Fotis

Subject: RE: [datadiscovery] RDA Data Discovery Topic E: Call tomorrow
    Dear All,
We had described a number of geoscience discovery use cases in the CINERGI
project – see https://github.com/CINERGI/UseCases – these might be added to
    your compilation.
I’d also like to add some thoughts on the description of data-related roles
in the last minutes, specifically on the
    “Data aggregator/data repository/metadata catalogue:
is responsible for running a data discovery service for human & machine,
    such as
DataCite, DataOne, RDA (Research Data Australia), and data.gov etc.
    Generally, a
data aggregator isn’t responsible for describing data (i.e. creating
    metadata), but
may communicate with data providers what attributes a metadata should have
    to
    make it more discoverable.”
Perhaps we can distinguish between two types of metadata aggregators: A)
aggregators that prescribe a metadata access protocol and encoding standard
that they can harvest. For example, CUAHSI HIS Central harvests metadata
from HydroServers, which all “speak” WaterML/WaterOneFlow services. In this
“pure metadata aggregation” case, no additional metadata is created, indeed.
    B) aggregators that harvest heterogeneous metadata, and “add value” by
creating metadata to support additional modes of search. Creating metadata
in this case may be inevitable – unless the aggregator only falls back to
metadata fields that are common across the harvested repositories (the least
common denominator approach). I consider CINERGI an aggregator of this
second type because it includes a metadata augmentation pipeline that
generates keywords with references to ontology classes, spatial extents,
etc. to enable faceted browsing by characteristics not explicitly present in
the harvested metadata (ie enables additional modes of search, and adds
support for semantic interoperability). Obviously, there may be multiple
value-add aggregators for the same data sources, to enable different
    additional search capabilities.
