Dear Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems’ Data IG members,
As pointed out by Jens, we will be holding a kick-off meeting for the proposed Small Uncrewed Aircraft and Autonomous Platforms Data Working Group on October 2 @ 12:00-13:30 UTC. You can now register for the session via the RDA website here: https://www.rd-alliance.org/new-rda-working-group-small-uncrewed-aircraf…. We will be doing further promotion of this meeting in the coming weeks, but if you have any colleagues think may be able to contribute, please feel free to forward the meeting registration link on to them.
    Thank you,

Subject: Proposal for a Small Uncrewed Aircraft and Autonomous Platforms Data WG
Dear Members of the Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems’ Data IG,
We received support from RDA Europe through the TIGER programme for the facilitation of a working group (https://www.rd-alliance.org/get-involved/calling-rda-community/rda-tiger).
The proposed Small Uncrewed Aircraft and Autonomous Platforms Data WG will work on the core issues of the Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems’ Data IG. The expected outputs of the sUAS Data WG are specifications for drone services and resulting data for research and a demonstrator to show how these guidelines support the design and implementation of cloud-based infrastructures for sUAS data. The primary target audience is researchers working with data collected by sUAS platforms. The open nature of the guidelines will support interoperability, which in turn is expected to lower entry barriers for SMEs as service providers for sUAS-based missions.
The aim and deliverables of the WG are not set in stone but are a proposal to the community. We will soon send out an invitation for an online meeting to discuss this proposal and the WG. The present timeline is to launch the WG at the RDA Plenary 22 in early 2024 and present the outcomes at the RDA Plenary 25/IDW/SciDataCon 2025 in Brisbane, Australia, in late 2025.
The Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems’ Data IG will continue to operate and will not be replaced by the WG. There will be considerable overlap for the duration of the WG activities, but the WG will be thematically focused while the IG will continue to explore new topics.
RDA is a community organisation, and it only lives through community participation. Unfortunately, the pandemic stalled the work of the Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems’ Data IG, and the chairs of the IG are no longer able to lead this group. To help run the IG and WG, we are looking for volunteers to chair these groups. Please send me or the RDA Secretariate a message if you are interested in becoming a co-chair of the IG or WG.
Last but not least, I would like to thank the outgoing IG chairs for their initiative to set up the IG and for leading it. It would not have been possible without you.
    Regards,
    Jens
