Data Rescue Funding

In many cases, important at-risk data have been noticed, but the stewards do not have the financial resources to deal with that. Attracting the focus of an entity that has (or can attract) proper funding is then the biggest challenge.
Is it true that a healthy discussion of this matter can over time be very helpful to the goals of this group?

    Dear Chris,
I think that the problem has to be defined in a bit more detail, e.g.
    – What volume of data are we talking about?
    – Just data, or also software, documentation, meta-data and so forth?
    – Who will access it and how? (Or do you just need a bit repository service)
    – Who will periodically verify that the data is still usable?
I could go on and on but it may be more useful to post a “real case study” – I am seeing someone on Friday who would like us (CERN) to “preserve” around 100TB of data.
If there is interest, I can post a summary in January.
    Cheers, Jamie
