Meeting objectives
This BOF aims to socialize a growing problem experienced in the data publication process and to gage interest in formalizing an RDA Working Group to address it. The ultimate goal of the proposed working group is to reduce friction currently present between repository and publisher workflows as they pertain to- and rely upon the data publication process. If endorsed, the WG will refine and formally document a detailed workflow(s) between the journal, publication author, and Earth, Space, and Environmental Science disciplinary data repository and identify cross-stakeholder dependencies to recommend activities that are necessary for relevant processes to move forward in a more coordinated way. This WG intends to advance current progress on this effort by using the specific use cases of data submission to a data repository for preservation at, or near, the time the respective manuscript is submitted to the journal that will cite the data.
The WG plans to engage journal, repository, and research communities to solicit feedback that will result in a set of recommendations for better transparency and coordination across both processes.
This work has been presented for discussion at prior working sessions of the Earth, Space and Environmental Science Interest Group at Research Data Alliance Plenaries (P17, P18, P20, and IDW23) and the Earth Science Information Partners meetings over the past two years.

Short introduction describing any previous activities:
This BOF is about Introducing a working group that aims to reduce friction currently present between repository and publisher workflows as they pertain to- and rely upon the data publication process. The group proposes to refine and formally document a detailed workflow(s) between the journal, publication author, and Earth, Space, and Environmental Science disciplinary data repository and identify cross-stakeholder dependencies to recommend activities that are necessary for relevant processes to move forward in a more coordinated way.
This activity began at the ESIP July Meeting in 2020. Several presentations were made at the following RDA Plenaries -P16, P17, P18, P19, P20, and P21 in the ESIP/RDA Earth, Space and Environmental Science Interest Group, as well as at several ESIP meetings. Although there was interest in the topic at these meetings, COVID restrictions made it hard to get a community together. An additional issue is that the proposed workflow involves 3 communities: publishers, domain repositories and scientific researchers. It is hard to find a meeting where all three groups attend – e.g., domain repositories and researchers do not come en masse to RDA meetings, whilst publishers do not go to ESIP. At P21, at a meeting at the AGU Fall meeting in 2023 and at the ESIP January 2024 meeting the support was very strong for the formation of an RDA working group to have the workflow endorsed as a RDA Earth, Space and Environmental Sciences Working Group.
