Meeting title:

Expansion of the Research Data Science Schools 2017 - progress and overview

A short introduction describing the activities and the scope of the group:

The Working Group was founded to set up a series of Summer Schools in Research Data Science for Early Career Researchers (ECRs). In particular, the Schools offer a model for providing that cohort with a set of foundational skills for analysing, managing, visualising and processing research data. The schools were specifically to be delivered to ECRs from Low and Middle Income Countries (LMICs). The first of these Schools ran at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Trieste, Italy, in August 2016 and two more Schools will run this year (in July at ICTP Trieste and in December at ICTP Sao Paolo, Brazil).

The initiative is continuing with support and engagement from both CODATA and RDA. There are a number of significant outputs which will be the focus for discussion: the model for the curriculum as a broad but shallow foundational course in essential data skills for researchers; the materials which can be reused and refined (and approaches to making this process as effective as possible); the model for building a network of schools; and the participants and instructors as the agents of this.

The organisers would like to discuss their vision, invite feedback and seek guidance and engagements from participants in relation to future activities.

The materials used in the school can be found at

A description of the first school can be found at http://bit.ly/2sB1WTK.

Meeting objectives:

  • To provide an update on the Schools’ continuing work and related activities.
  • To provide an outline of the curriculum developed and its impact based on feedback from two instances of the school.
  • To invite feedback and seek guidance and engagements from participants in relation to future activities.

Meeting agenda:

1) Short introduction to the goals of the WG and description of schools run in 2017.
2) Presentation on achievements of the CODATA TG in its first year.
3) Presentation on present school curriculum.
4) Discussion of the vision and near to mid term plan for the Schools.

Target audience:

This will be of relevance to two groups within the RDA, namely those working in the development of training materials in Data Science and Research Data Management and those working on increasing capacity in Low and Middle Income Countries. Attendees can prepare by consulting the materials listed above. It is essential that we do not have any conflicts with relevant meetings (this occured in the Barcelona meeting) and we request that the meeting not be held at the end of the conference.
