ADA:WG Working Meeting

Short introduction describing the activities and the scope of the group:

The ADA:WG [1,2] was established in 2016 to inspect the emerging technology of Array Databases to provide support for technologists and decision makers considering Big Data services in academic and industrial environments (such as in large-scale data centers) by establishing best-practice guidelines on how to optimally serve multi-dimensional gridded Big Data through Array Databases. This will be accomplished through a neutral, thorough hands-on evaluation assessing available Array Database systems and comparable technology …
- based on relevant standards, such as the NIST Big Data Reference Architecture, ISO "Array SQL", and OGC Web Coverage Processing Service (WCPS) for the geo domain;
- comparing technical criteria like functionality, thereby eliciting the state of the art;
- establishing and running a combination of domain-driven and domain-neutral benchmarks that will be run on each platform;
- as well as real-life, publicly accessible deployments at scale.
The result, consisting of the AD-WG report together with the open-source benchmarking software and the services established, will establish a hitherto non-existing overview on the state of the art and best use of Array Databases in science, engineering, and beyond.

At the inaugural WG meeting at P8 / Denver [4], initial questions were clarified and participant interests were collected. A draft document has been established [3] an is continously being extended.

Meeting objectives

The objective of the meeting proposed is clearly delineated: advancing the working document on the RDA wiki, in particular:
- assign caretakers ("champions") for the systems to be investigated, starting with the volunteer list collected at P8
- refine and agree the testing criteria
- extend the set of installations of the systems under inspection and agree on data ztypes and volumes to be served

Meeting agenda

The agenda (moderation: Peter Baumann) will address each of the document sections (as per wiki), working on each item in turn with the goal of clarifying, stratifying, refining, and extending each section contents:
- welcome & tour de table (Peter Baumann)
- Introduction to Array Databases (all)
- Array Standards (all)
- Array Systems Under Test (all)
- Publicly Accessible Array Services (all)
- Array Systems Assessment (all)
- Wrap-up & next steps (Peter Baumann)

The target audience, as stated in the Charter, is threefold:
- use case providers: they bring in data and challenges (aka queries)
- service providers: they provide storage and compute space for setting up realistically large deployments of systems
- technology (software) providers: they provide their tools for installation and operation, as well as support.

In preparation participants should consider the following questions:
- what resources (writing, hosting, service setup, etc.) can I bring in?
- what outcome do I expect?
- what capability did I always want to have on my data (and didn't dare to ask IT for) ?
