Mark Gahegan is Director of the Centre for e-Research and Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Auckland Prior to this he spent nine years as Associate Director of the GeoVISTA Center at Penn State in the USA. He serves on the editorial board of 9 journals. His research interests are at the interface of the natural and computational sciences, concentrating on geographical information science, remote sensing, spatial data structures and algorithms, eResearch (cyber-infrastructure), knowledge representation, geo-visualization and discovery science. In an eResearch capacity, he has worked with a number of different academic communities: geosciences, bioinformatics, fungal plant pathogens, digital archaeology, and climate change research. He was lead author of the National eScience Infrastructure (NeSI) proposal that was recently funded by the Ministry of Science and Innovation to coordinate support for eResearch and high performance computing across New Zealand.
