Liou Xie is an assistant professor in the Center for Earth and Environmental Science at SUNY Plattsburgh, where she teaches courses in Urban Geography and Planning, Urban China, Sustainable Transportation, Human Geography, Economic Geography, and Sustainable Communities. Liou also co-coordinates SUNY Plattsburgh’s major in Environmental Studies. Dr. Xie’s research focuses on urban development strategies and public transportation in over a dozen cities in China, such as Beijing, Shanghai, Wuhan, and Xiamen, as well as other cities like Hong Kong, Montreal, QC and Plattsburgh, New York. Dr. Xie has several years of experience working with college students in international settings. For example, she has been taking her Urban Geography and Planning class on field trips to Montreal for five years. In Summer 2014 and Winter 2016, Dr. Xie taught two intensive courses, Environmental Management and Environment Impact Assessment, at Wanli University in Ningbo, China. She is currently developing a summer study abroad experience in China for SUNY Plattsburgh students which will be launched in Spring 2018. Dr. Xie holds a Ph.d. in Sustainability from Arizona State University and a master’s degree in Urban and Economic Geography from the University of Hong Kong. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Resources and Environment Planning and Management from Beijing Normal University.
