Blaz Stres is Associate Professor in Microbiology and Research Fellow at University of Ljubljana. He received his PhD degree in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry in 2003 from University of Ljubljana on the molecular methods for analyses of functional guild microbial community structure in soil samples. Since 2004 he is a staff member at University of Ljubljana and has collaborated with and worked in the labs of Michigan State University, Center for Microbial Ecology, East Lansing, USA; INRA and University of Burgundy, Dijon, France; Swedish Agricultural University, Uppsala, Sweden; University of Innsbruck, Innsbruck, Austria; Research Unit for Environmental Genomics at the Helmholtz Center Munich, munich, Germany; Fondazione MACH, Trento, Italy. His main expertise is on characterization of microbial communities with modern molecular tools (omics) and their interactions with their environment (host, soil, water), explaining the structure-function relationship of bacterial, archaeal, protozoal and fungal components. His current interest focuses on understanding microbial communities from various hypoxic and anaerobic ecosystems (soil, sediment, rumen, biogas, human intestinal tract), their metabolites and transcriptomes and development of novel bionformatic tools. Research is funded by the Slovenian Research Agency (ARRS), University Research Programs and industry.
