Volker Beckmann received his PhD in 2001 from the University of Hamburg (Germany) for studies of supermassive black holes, i.e. of different classes of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). He has been working in the field of hard X-ray astrophysics in Italy, Switzerland, and in the US at NASA and taught at the University of Maryland Baltimore County. While he is an expert on AGN, he worked on hard X-ray satellite missions like INTEGRAL and Swift. From 2009 to 2016 he was in charge of the scientific lead of a new data analysis and computing centre for astrophysics at the APC in Paris. From 2016 to 2020 he was scientific director of CNRS / IN2P3 for the domain of computing and data science. He is heavily involved in the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) programme. He was work package leader for interoperability in the EOSC-pilot project, and work package leader for "EOSC in action" within the EOSC-Pillar project. He also led the CNRS-EOSC working group. Since 2020 he is working at the French Ministry for Higher Education, Research and Innovation (MESRI), where he is responsible for the implementation of the EOSC in France.
