University of Wisconsin - Madison, 1970 -- bachelor's degree in English.
Worcester State University (Worcester, MA) -- 1979 -- master's degree in Education
My early professional roles were in K-12 education and then surveying and mapping. In 1984 I began working as a technical writer and marketing professional in the real-time computing and GIS industries.
In 1994, helped found the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC), an open membership, international not-for-profit consensus standards organisation. I served OGC until retiring from my OGC Senior Staff Writer position in 2016.
Current focus: As an independent writer, consultant and OGC member, I am working to advance technical standards that enable efficient publishing, communication, discovery, curation, comparison, assessment, access, aggregation, sharing, and analysis of environmental data. I am interested in open standard data models and encodings that enable workflows and practical policies for the open sharing of environmental data. Ultimately, I am interested in working with others to make environmental data and knowledge a foundation for economic and cultural transformation. This probably cannot happen, however, until open data in research becomes the norm.
