Hawani has over 16 years of experience of the mapping and GIS sectors. She was appointed in September 2007 at the Department of Geoinformation, Faculty of Built Environment and Surveying (formerly known as Faculty of Geoinformation and Real Estate), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and currently as a Senior Lecturer since January 2014. Her PhD was from the School of Geography, the University of Nottingham, United Kingdom and graduated in 2014. She established her research as a Principal Researcher and Co-Investigator at the TropicalMap Research Group with the University and received the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) support of grants research awards over RM2Mil . Her research focus is on citizen science, geo-crowdsourcing and GIS. Her current grant is now work on linked data framework for pheno-informatics for paddy crop. She is active in promoting her team's mobile crowdsource app, Geotrees for citizen tree monitoring. She is a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society (UK) , the member of the Royal Institute of Surveyors (RISM) and Institution of Geospatial and Remote Sensing Malaysia (IGRSM).
