Since 2002 I have worked as an academic data librarian, providing support to researchers across disciplines in the areas data life cycle planning, data management, data reuse, and programming. Between 2002 and 2017, I developed the University of California, Berkeley Library Data Lab program and helped establish the Research Data Consulting Service, a partnership between the Library and UC Berkeley’s central IT service. My work at Berkeley also included collaborations with the Berkeley Institute for Data Science, Social Sciences D-Lab, the Berkeley Initiative for Transparency in Social Sciences, and the California Digital Library. In 2017, I left UC Berkeley to accept a faculty position at the University of Rhode Island Library. Since my arrival, I’ve been involved in a range of activities related to building capacity for data intensive research and teaching. I serve on the Faculty Senate Information Technology and Infrastructure Committee, the Data Science Curriculum Committee, and the Big Data Advisory Committee. I was co-PI on a grant from the Champlin Foundation which provided funding to establish an Artificial Intelligence Lab within the Library. In addition, I am PI on a grant from the National Network of Library Medicine to develop a natural language processing approach to assessing student learning in health and nutrition. I am professionally active in the research data community, serving as an elected administrative committee member of IASSIST, an international association that has played an important role in the development of metadata standards, data curation approaches, and career development for data professionals
