Dr. Dietrich Nelle is a science manager from Germany. As director of the German Information Centre for Life Sciences (ZB MED) he has made the provision of innovative services for the digital transformation in science his top priority. In his previous assignment Dr. Dietrich Nelle served as head of the Directorate „Science Organisations“ in the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF). His main responsibilities included the development of new science policies and funding strategies, the creation of a National Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Germany (Leopoldina), the development of roadmaps for research infrastructures on national and European levels, the preparation of new funding approaches for information infrastructures and digitization in science and humanities, the preparation of a law adapting legal framework conditions to the needs of science, strategic and administrative issues in the funding of non-university Research Organizations (Max-Planck-Society, Fraunhofer Society, Helmholtz Association, Leibniz Association), as well as institutional and project funding in the field of social sciences, humanities and research museums. Also, he was a driving force for the creation of the German Council for Information Structures and a founding member. Earlier positions focussed on European matters and on transition management in Germany, Europe and beyond in the wake of the fall of the Berlin wall. He has studied law, history and political sciences in Bonn, Cologne, Santiago de Chile and Paris (Ecole Nationale d’Administration). His PhD thesis on the evolution of private law in Latin America was awarded with the Prize of the President of the Italian Republic.
