As Provost (and before that at various times Associate Provost for Academic Personnel and Chair) I was very much involved in seeing faculty through tenure and their promotions. Work with data per se is considered pre-research (my term) at too many places - the work has to be better understood and, where appropriate, made a recognized research endeavor to be critiqued by peers and used as part of evaluation for tenure, promotion, salary review, and other academic ways of recognizing achievement. I am also a historical linguist who works with data (not big usually) in developing theories of grammar change. I am retired from Wayne State University, but sill active in research.
