Session Abstract |
Meeting Objectives
|
|
In this session, we will be considering the role of research institutions in relation to Research Data Commons.
A Research Data Commons is conceived as a cloud-based data platform with a governance structure that allows a community to manage, analyse, and share its data. Research Data Commons generally bring together data management tools with compute capabilities, although there is no single architecture that necessarily underpins all commons. Existing Data Commons include NIH Data Commons and the NCI Cancer Research Data Commons, with the Australian Research Data Commons in the process of building three different commons. Following the GORC model published by the Research Data Alliance late in 2023, a Research Data Commons consists of nine essential elements, including both technical and human aspects..
We will seek to address questions such as:
* What are the opportunities that a Research Data Commons can provide for an institution?
* What are the challenges for an institution of a Research Data Commons model?
* How to build your institutional architecture so it connects to and enables your researchers to best benefit from these Research Data Commons

Group Activities & Scope
|
|
The Research Data Architectures in Research Institutions Interest Group is primarily concerned with technical architectures for managing research data within universities and other multi-disciplinary research institutions. It provides insight into the approaches being taken to the development and operation of such architectures and their success or otherwise in enabling good practice.
