RDA EU Ambassador Earth Sciences / Climate modelling

Sébastien Denvil is analyst at the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) and has 18 years of experience in climate and weather simulations, High Performance Computing and e-science infrastructure. Working for the production section of the forecast department he brings his experience of deploying and operating distributed infrastructure able to speed up the development to operation process and to enhance and make visible the trustworthiness of the ECMWF data repository.

Before joining ECMWF he has been involved at the heart of international standardization dynamics and at the heart of research infrastructure design and implement process for numerical climate simulations which supplied the 4th (2007), 5th (2013) and 6th (2021) reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). He was the coordinator of the operational oversight team deploying and operating the international climate data infrastructure supporting the 6th phase of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6).

The focus of my ambassadorship work is to raise awareness and further uptake of RDA results by key scientific user representatives. New practices need to flow within the data practitioners themselves to maximize the RDA impact.

FOCUS

Improving visibility, discoverability, re-use and reproducibility by bringing existing article/data links together, normalizing them using a common schema, and exposing the full set as an open servicehas been the focus of the Ambassadorial work across various venues. To impact on data practitioners generating adoption stories will be of utmost importance. Feedbacks from data practitioners will be key to RDA so as to measure RDA outputs potential rate of adoption.

The following papers summarize and describe how the climate community has adopted several RDA recommendations. The focus was made on Data Description, Data Management, Dissemination, link and find.

"Coordinating an operational data distribution network for CMIP6 data"

The paper states among other things how those recommendations have been deployed and operated within an internationally distributed infrastructure. This paper highlighted the level of coordination needed to put together a comprehensive set of services on top of properly managed scientific data.
