Short introduction describing the scope of the group and if any previous activities
The pace of progress is currently considered to be insufficient to fully meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. This BoF will highlight main themes, gaps, and coordination needs related to SDGs data, to frame a dialogue between (e.g. via a panel of experts from within RDA, UNCTAD) to discuss challenges and opportunities for coordinated SDGs data efforts. We aim to inspire the cross-sector and cross-disciplinary connective thinking necessary to address data needs for the SDGs, and identify pathways to further contribute to coordinating data collection campaigns to advance the SDGs. While there are many relevant and related RDA WG and IG activity that we intend to draw from (e.g. Data for Development, Geospatial, Long Tail of Research Data, Health/Agriculture/sUAS specific disciplinary outcomes as well as other planned IDW events such as SciDataCon session 'Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Data at the Subnational Level') -- this particular BoF group has not had any previous activities.

The Sustainable Development Goals Report, 2017: This BoF will broadly focus on two of the main data needs as identified by this report: (1) capacity-building efforts and the mobilization of resources (2) new data sources and technologies for data collection and data integration. Both include necessary partnerships with civil society, the private sector and academia and need for alliances with research data.

High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), 2018: We will summarize key outputs and discussions leading up to and from the HLPF to (1) and (2) above. Relevant example materials, which were released in preparation for the HLPF: Harnessing new technologies to achieve the SDGs, report by the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and Impact of rapid technological change on the achievement of the SDGs, a high-level roundtable from the Commission on Science and Technology for Development (CSTD)

Meeting objectives
(1) Contextualize data needs for Sustainable Development Goals in relation to RDA connections, and draw from previous events such as HLPF and SciDataCon sessions such as Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Data at the Subnational Level.
(2) Moderated panel of experts across sectors (e.g. RDA, CODATA, GEO, UN) to discuss challenges and opportunities for meaningful engagement
(3) Identify pathways for collaboration, communication, useful input or sharing "calls to action" generally
(4) Discuss a way to offer specific ‘Data Community’ comments and useful input/discussion for SDGs (e.g. potentially on draft 2018 SDGs Report)
Meeting agenda
(1) Opening Remarks and Briefing
Contextualize data needs for Sustainable Development Goals and connections to RDA
Synthesize from previous events during HLPF and IDW to frame this session
Introduce beginning of what we hope to accomplish with comments
(2) Moderated panel of experts across sectors (e.g. RDA, CODATA, GEO, UN)
with a way to have active audience participation in generating ideas / fleshing out opportunities for collaboration, and to offer input during and after the panel.
(3) Identify / Discuss specific pathways for collaboration
This will be informed by lead up conversations with groups such as UNCTAD, and discussions from the HLPF and during International Data Week, but may include:
Report back on “Calls to Action” targeted to specific RDA WG or IG
Connect RDA outputs / recommendations relevant to SDGs data needs
Organize “Data Community” comments on SDGs Report Draft -- as appropriate and either within a specific WG or IG or open to community broadly, etc
Audience
Any members of RDA or International Data Week attendees interested in providing community input towards addressing data needs within the SDGs. Audience should come prepared by:
Familiar with SDGs: goals, targets, indicators, timeline
Understand general SDGs reporting and structure (e.g. annual reports, indicators reports, voluntary national reports, High Level Political Forum)
Consider attending any other IDW events with SDGs focus (kickoff co-located meeting, SciDataCon sessions) -- a list of “SDGs” events to consider attending will be provided prior to IDW after session finalization for all IDW events.
Consider involvement in discussion leading up to BoF (link to discussion forum provided once finalized).
