Facilitating active communities of practice to address data challenges: 3 November, 16:20 - 17:00 UTC

A discussion on how the U.S. Geological Survey Community for Data Integration, Earth Science Information Partners, and other organizations have facilitated communities of practice over the past decades and some of the data challenges they have addressed. The groups will present different ways to support CoPs and how to leverage each other's work, especially opportunities to connect with the newer RDA Communities of Practice.

Speakers: 

 

Leslie Hsu, USGS, coordinator of the Community for Data Integration (CDI)

Leslie joined the USGS in 2015 as the coordinator of the Community for Data Integration (CDI). This position combines her interests in Earth science, technology, information management, and facilitation of communities of practice. Leslie is also the project coordinator of the USGS Model Catalog

Before joining the USGS, she spent time exploring fluvial seismology, debris flow erosion, creeping faults, alluvial fans, and atmospheric chemistry.

Susan Shingledecker, Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP) Executive Director

Susan brings to ESIP over a decade of nonprofit management experience with both national and regional organizations and a diverse 20 year career in the environmental field spanning international consulting, federal and state public policy, state government, outdoor recreation and conservation experience.

Prior to joining ESIP, Susan served as Vice President and Director of Programs for Chesapeake Conservancy a regional conservation organization based in Annapolis, MD dedicated to restoring the health of the nation’s largest estuary and connecting people to the Bay.

She worked closely with the organization’s Board of Directors, led the program, administration and finance teams of this $7 million organization with 40 staff that span from Central Pennsylvania to Southern Virginia.

Hilary Hanahoe, RDA Secretary General

As Secretary General of the Research Data Alliance (RDA) since 2018, Hilary’s responsibilities include leadership of RDA’s membership, effective management of the RDA organization and its legal entity (RDA Foundation), engagement with RDA stakeholders and organisations, and sustainable stewardship of the dynamic, active, and high-impact community. She is passionate about the work of the Research Data Alliance and its vibrant community. As part of her role, she raises awareness of the RDA activities and outputs, advocates for new members and increased engagement in the Alliance. She is also involved in the financial and organisational sustainability of RDA on an international level.

Panel Session: Implementing FAIR: Funder policy updates, roadmaps, and next steps: 10 November, 01:00 - 02:00 UTC

 

Keith Russell, Manager Engagements & Expertise, Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC)

Keith Russell is responsible for managing engagement and expertise delivery to research organisations and research infrastructure organisations around Australia to enable researchers to be able to reuse data more often. In this role he has worked on establishing projects and engagements with a range of organisations, working on policies and the human and technical infrastructure required to make research data more FAIR.

Fran Lightsom, Supervisory Oceanographer, U. S. Geological Survey

Fran Lightsom has worked for the U. S. Geological Survey for 31 years. She currently supervises the information science group at the USGS Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center, leads two data management projects, and coordinates the USGS Metadata Reviewers Community of Practice. Lightsom has a Ph.D. in physical oceanography. Her first assignment at USGS was processing, quality control, and management of a collection of USGS oceanographic time-series data.

Viv Hutchison, Branch Chief for Science Data Management, Core Science Analytics, Synthesis and Libraries program in the US Geological Survey (USGS)

Viv Hutchison is the Branch Chief for Science Data Management in the Core Science Analytics, Synthesis and Libraries program in the US Geological Survey (USGS). Her team is primarily dedicated to developing and maintaining a suite of enterprise-wide data management tools, promoting best practices that support USGS scientists in long-term management of science data, and leading communities of practice on data integration. She has a Masters of Library Science from the University of Maryland College Park, loves hiking, backpacking, and snowboarding, and has worked for USGS since 2002.

Susan K. Gregurick, Associate Director for Data Science and Director of the Office of Data Science Strategy (ODSS) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH)

Susan K. Gregurick leads the implementation of the NIH Strategic Plan for Data Science through scientific, technical, and operational collaboration with the institutes, centers, and offices that comprise NIH. Dr. Gregurick received the 2020 Leadership in Biological Sciences Award from the Washington Academy of Sciences for her work in this role. She was instrumental in the creation of the ODSS in 2018 and served as a senior advisor to the office until being named to her current position.
