Groups:

  • IG RDA/CODATA Materials Data, Infrastructure & Interoperability
  • WG International Materials Resource Registries
  • IG Research data needs of the Photon and Neutron Science community

Brief introduction describing the activities and scope of the group(s)

The IG Materials Data, Infrastructure, & Interoperability (MDII) was founded in 2013 and aims to foster exchange of computational & experimental materials data through shared online repositories, standardized formats/terminologies, & open programming interfaces.

The WG International Materials Resource Registry (IMRR), founded in 2016, aims to link the growing number of materials resources that exist or are being developed (datasets, websites, repositories, registries, etc.) in a way that makes it easier for the mat'l community to find and share relevant information and data.

The IG Photon/Neutron IG was founded in 2012 and aims to address data related issues of science applications associated with large scale source facilities, including: synchrotron x-ray sources, free-electron laser x-ray sources, reactor and spallation neutron sources, muon sources, large electron microscope, NMR and high-powered laser facilities. These facilities are characterised by a central facility providing access to scarce and specialised instruments which are typically beyond the means of single research groups, and are thus shared and used by many research teams to conduct experiments.

Meeting objectives

In this session we will discuss how the IGs MDII & Photon/Neutron and the WG IMRR are working on the adaptation and implementation of the Materials Resource Registries in the Photon/Neutron community.

The IG MDII and WG IMRR has reached consensus on metadata for the Materials Resource Registry and a federation of Materials Resource Registries has been successfully deployed.

This joint session will focus on how to improve data management practices involving beamlines and their various end stations. While some data format standards for beamline data are in use, there is increasing need for higher level data annotation and management in terms of metadata standards for beamline data products.

Meeting agenda

0 - 5 mins - Opening of the session and outline of agenda
5 - 30 mins - An introduction to large scale light source facilities. What they are and what are the data management needs/demands of major scientific user facilities.
31- 50 mins - Overview of Materials Resource Registry Federation: What is the MRR software and how the MRRFederation operates
51 - 90 mins - Joint IGs MDII, Photon/Neutron & WG IMMRR Initiatives that could be useful to the communities of the IGs & WG in RDA..

Target audience:

All members of the RDA may find this session interesting and the work discussed in this session can also be translated to many other domains. The Resource Registry software is open source and provides a useful starting point for discovering data, services, and tools by implementing a federated environment of registry instances that can be adapted to any metadata schema and a variety of resource types.
