Meeting title

Recent Developments for Machine-Actionable DMPs

Groups: IG Active Data Management Plans, IG Domain Repositories

Short introduction describing the activities and the scope of the groups:

The proliferation of international working groups focused on a vision of enhanced data management plans (DMPs) signals widespread interest in repositioning DMPs as living documents useful for structuring the course of research activities and integrating with other systems and workflows. This transformation will provide significant benefits to the complex ecosystem of stakeholders (researchers, institutions, funders, repositories, and others) that currently employ DMPs, but it will also require a significant degree of coordination to achieve practical results. Specifically, active DMPs should enable:

  1. Researchers to manage, share, and discover data more easily, without having to enter the same information into multiple systems;
  2. Infrastructure providers, especially data repositories, to plan their resources;
  3. Institutions to provide effective data services; and
  4. Funders to monitor data-related activities associated with individual grants.

Emergent themes across the Active DMPs and Domain Repositories IGs related to machine-actionable DMPs include interoperability (between existing standards and systems) and offering relevant guidance and resources at appropriate points throughout the research lifecycle. In order to achieve these goals and adhere to the FAIR data principles, we must work together to define and collect the specific information needed to support service requests and the use of domain infrastructure.

Meeting objectives

As DMP stakeholders move forward with plans to implement active, machine-actionable DMP use cases, the RDA can serve as a forum for sharing experiences and working together to create solutions that will benefit the entire research community. Our objectives for this session are to bring the active DMP conversations together, align requirements where appropriate, and provide updates about work in this arena. Two working groups were launched at the previous plenary meeting; each will present their case statements and discuss progress to date:

  - DMP Common Standards WG: define a standard for expression of machine-readable and actionable DMPs
  - Exposing DMPs WG: develop use cases, workflows and guidelines on how to fulfil the needs for FAIR outputs by sharing DMP content or metadata at appropriate times in the research lifecycle

Additional lightning presentation and discussion slots will enable others to report on existing work that addresses the central themes of interoperability and disciplinary tailoring and collect feedback.

Meeting agenda
1. Introduction of active DMPs as a common focus in both IGs (10 mins)
2. What’s new and burning questions - community lightning talks (5 mins each)
  - DMP Common Standards WG case statement (Tomasz Miksa, Paul Walk)
  - Exposing DMPs WG case statement (Angus Whyte)
  - RDM protocols developments (Peter Doorn)
  - Interdisciplinary Earth Data Alliance (IEDA) DMP project update (Kerstin Lehnert)
  - Australian Data Management Records (Andrew Janke, Helen Morgan, Siobhann McCafferty)
  - FAIRsharing resources for DMPs (Pete McQuilton)
  - DMPRoadmap project update (Sarah Jones, Stephanie Simms)
  - Force11 FAIR DMPs activities (Mercè Crosas, Susanna Sansone)
3. Discussion (40 mins, Kevin Ashley - moderator)

Audience:

Creators of DMPs; consumers of DMPs; research data infrastructure administrators; DMP service providers. Prepare by familiarization with functionality of existing DMP services (DMPonline & DMPTool) and domain repository requirements. Review case statements for new Active DMPs WGs (forthcoming) and white paper on community-generated use cases for machine-actionable DMPs.
