Professionalizing data stewardship in the RDA community

Submitted by Mijke Jetten

Meeting objectives:

Data stewardship and managing data skills are essential in research. The lack of consensus on the responsibilities, knowledge and skills of data stewards gives confusion about the role and hampers adequate data steward capacity. To our knowledge, also a coherent approach and dedicated training for data stewardship on the (inter)national level is lacking as well. This combined with the lack of sufficient funding limits vital developments such as recruiting procedures and defining career paths for the current and future data stewards.

In this BoF-session, we focus on involving the expertise of the RDA community to join forces in professionalizing data stewardship. The meeting objectives are:

  • Exchange knowledge of and experiences in (inter)national efforts to professionalize data stewardship,
  • Explore what is needed and what challenges need to be addressed to professionalize data stewardship,
  • Discuss how we best get started with professionalizing data stewardship in the context of the RDA.

The expected output will be:

  • A plan of action to promote professionalizing data stewardship in the context of the working/interest group structure of the RDA.
