Meeting objectives: 

Using persistent identifiers to reference all the key elements of research is an aspiration to improve research efficiency and innovation in a globally joined-up information system. This session will review some of the latest developments in persistent identifiers for the scholarly system and identify opportunities for coordination.

  In this session we will also look at the user perspective: how research communities and organisations are traversing the world of PIDs, what is working for them, and where there are still gaps or uncertainties.

Target Audience: 

The target audience covers a wide cross-section of the RDA community. Indeed, anyone who is engaged in producing, storing, management and preservation of data should care about PIDs. In practice, this meeting will appeal most to organisations that provide PID services to the international research community and organisations that implement or otherwise use PIDs

Brief introduction describing the activities and scope of the group: 

The PID IG is the cross-pollination place for PID initiatives within and beyond RDA.

 

The pervasive use of persistent identifiers is seen as a foundational element in anchoring and referencing research data in an interoperable way. The purpose of the Persistent Identifier Interest Group is to synchronize identifier-related efforts, address important and emerging PID-related topics and coordinate activities, including appropriate RDA Working Groups, to support practical solutions for PID-related issues from the engaged communities.

The PID IG fosters working groups to address specific topics, and in particular to address and define emerging PID use cases in the domain of data, and how the research community would benefit from a portfolio of global open identifiers for persons, data objects, organizations, grants, etc. Where applicable the PID-IG collaborates with existing RDA working groups, or it establishes new working groups based on priority areas as identified at RDA plenaries.

The PID IG is emerging as the "cross-pollination" place for PID initiatives within and beyond RDA.
