American Geophysical Union call for abstracts - IN021: Data rescue is more than just a PDF

by Denise Hills

Hello RDA Data Rescue! I would like to call your attention to a session soliciting abstracts at the American Geophysical Union (AGU) Annual meeting. Information about the meeting can be found here. Abstracts are due soon – 1 August 2018 23:59 EDT/03:59 +1 GMT – and I wanted to be sure you hadn’t missed this relevant session! Note that you need to be an AGU member to submit as first/presenting author, but membership is quite reasonable. Session information: IN021: Data rescue is more than just a PDF

automating data rescue practices?

by William Anderson

via Jason Clark on Twitter: https://twitter.com/jaclark/status/962022241650147329 { "jason": "clark" } - @jaclark: Built a prototype chatbot interface that walks you though a dialogue, creates metadata as http://Schema.org #jsonld + #markdown, and snaps a screenshot. Could be useful as a cursory #EndangeredData tool... https://github.com/jasonclark/archive-bot /WLA

Two of us at NAGARA 2017 in Boise

by Chris Muller

Just noticed that two of our group (and DAR-TG) members are presenting at this conference.   On Thursday July 13, John Faundeen is presenting in Session 6 – Preserving the Flow of Information: Investigating Trusted Digital Repository Certification Options.   The other member is me, presenting in Session 2 - What Would MacGyver do? Strategies for Digitizing Defunct or Proprietary Formats   As mentioned by others in RDA, people in all sorts of disciplines have many common interests when it comes to Data Rescue.

The goal of many of these volunteer-led events and organically formed organizations have been focused on the very real possibility of federal environmental data being less accessible in the near future. Any reallocation of federal funding coupled with small changes in the human and digital landscape associated with these national information resources could could severely compromise the earth
