ethics curricula for data science
by Oya Beyan
Dear IG members, at RDA 13 in Philadelphia, the keynote by Julia Stoyanovich[1][2] outlined key challenges for data science practice, which she framed as "responsible data science is our new frontier". One aspect highlighted in there was the need for standards in teaching such responsible data science, for which she gave her course[3] as an example. I wanted to thank our panelists (Fran Berman, Alison Specht, and Myrna Morales), Bonnie Tijerina (who had to cancel but kindly sent me some of her ideas and thoughts on the subject - I've uploaded them to to the ESAD IG site), Oya Beyan (co-chair and presenter), and Stefan Reichmann, the RDA Europe early career fellow who helped support us before and during the plenary (his summary is also on the ESAG IG site). Please take a look when you get a chance.0 | Add new comment

Ethics in Data Science: Use Cases
by Oya Beyan
Dear Colleagues, I would like to share a blog that discusses two implementations of data science from the ethics perspective. One of them is the COMPAS system used by judges across the United States to predict whether defendants awaiting trial are likely to re-offend. The other is the smart meter, an IoT application, that measures domestic electricity consumption to gain network transparency. It enables consumers to visualize and optimize their electricity consumption leading to better power management and flexible billing.0 | Add new comment
