Ethical and social issues with respect to data archiving, sharing, and reuse cut across many of the technical and policy work of the rest of the RDA.  Such issues are complementary to but separate from legal and regulatory aspects, since technology usually outpaces law and law itself is underpinned by ethical agreements and social contracts.

Topics of interest include the kinds/types of data that can be archived and reused and under what circumstances; education of researchers, research respondents, administrators, ethics bodies; gray and difficult areas of research that create new challenges for data management  ("dangerous data", legacy data, retrospective analyses, medical humanities, wellness/lifestyle data); developing policies and practices that encourage appropriate data sharing yet protect researchers and their research respondents; obligations to and impacts on families, communities, and societies; the ethics of reuse.

Re: RDA Ethics and Social aspects of UAS Data: proposal P15 ?

by Freyja Vandenboom

Dear Group members I hope everyone is well and apologies for filling up inboxes (instead of stockings As Alison pointed out we did indeed asked if there was interest in this group to share your expertise and discuss ethical guidelines for the use of drones (UAS) and drone data for research purposes. You can find it under WELDD (the listserv doesnt allow me to post hyperlinks I think) Hurray we now have a page and are going through the motions to make it endorsed etc so lost of opportunities also to shape the work we want to commit to the next coming months.

Re: [ethics-social-aspects-ig] Re: [ethics-social-aspects-ig] Deadline For P15 Group Session Submissions Extended To 5 December 2019

by Alison Specht

Yes, I thought there was interest, but it was for the drone work, highly appropriate of course. I agree, I think the role of ethics is a bit hazy for the average scientist and researcher of various sorts especially with increasing use of AI and as you say, web scraping. It would be good to have something that would bring ethical implications to the fore, and the PARSEC project (that Anne is involved with) might be a nice case study? Among others, of course.
