This joint session brings together the Active Data Management Plans IG, dedicated to evolving and monitoring DMP practices; the DMP Common Standards WG, which defines  the conceptual model and ensures harmonisation of maDMPs across platforms; and the Common Application Programming Interface (API) for machine-actionable Data Management Plans (maDMPs) WG, which addresses the technical layer by building the infrastructure needed to connect DMP platforms, automate information exchange, and support real-time integration with other systems. These groups combined continue to act on the shared vision reinforced in the Salzburg Manifesto, furthering the work of making data management plans into active, dynamic outputs.

Our goal is to have a working meeting that discusses the progress across all fronts: conceptual modelling, technical integration, and practical implementation.  We aim to showcase outcomes of recent efforts, present new approaches, and create space for a meaningful exchange on how these developments can support evolving research workflows. Work on the common API continues intensively until this meeting, with the goal of sharing progress and implementation updates with the RDA community.

More specifically, this session will:

  • Present a new approach to DMP templates that supports adaptability and monitoring across the research lifecycle (Active DMPs IG)
  • Review outstanding updates to any issues recorded in the DMP Common Standard and discuss next steps to addressing necessary open issues (DMP Common Standards WG)
    • Discuss pitfalls or blockers in work to integrate the standard or movement towards maDMPS
  • Provide an overview of recent developments in technical integration and automation of DMPs across platforms (maDMPs API WG)
    • Share progress on the common API standard, showcasing adoption by participating members and outlining upcoming releases that integrate this standard
    • Demonstrate use cases that take advantage of this common API standard
    • Make recommendations for implementing and using the common API standard and other machine-actionable functionality in DMPs
  • Facilitate an open discussion on workflows, use cases, and stakeholder needs—shifting the focus from tools to the broader ecosystem of data management
  • Collect input to inform group activities and align priorities for the coming months, feeding into the ongoing roadmap and the Case Statement for future work

Target audience

This session is relevant to anyone who might benefit from adopting the concept of machine actionable data management plans in their everyday work. This could include:

  • researchers, to enhance the rigor and transparency of their work, potentially leading to increased credibility and impact of their research outcomes.
  • repository managers, to enhance repository capabilities attracting more researchers to deposit their data, thereby enriching the repository’s content and fostering collaborations.
  • service providers, shaping the standards and demonstrating their commitment to advancing research data management practices by enabling machine actionability.
  • policy makers, to ensure that regulations and guidelines are well-informed, leading to more effective and feasible policies for managing research data.
  • research support staff, to enhance their support services, contributing to the overall improvement of research data management practices in their institutions.

While we are looking for people who could directly adopt our results, we are also looking for generally interested people who can advise and test assumptions and processes.

Group Activities and Scope

This is a joint session between:

  • Active Data Management Plans IG that acts as a nucleus for discussing requirements for and identifying developments needed to support active (i.e. able to evolve and be monitored) data management planning.
  • DMP Common Standards WG that realizes the vision of DMPs being fully integrated into the systems and workflows of the wider research data management environment, through the development of a common data model, vocabularies and reference implementations in popular formats, such as JSON, XML, RDF, etc.
  • The new maDMPs API WG (RDA TIGER) that focuses on defining the API specification and technical requirements that will ensure maDMPs are interoperable, automated and integrated within existing research workflows.

Both the maDMPs API WG and the DMP Common Standards WG complement each other’s activities by providing input that shapes the implementation and adoption of maDMPs across diverse settings and stakeholders. While the DMP Common Standards WG has developed an application profile to make traditional DMPs machine-actionable, adopted by major platforms like ARGOS, DAMAP, Data Stewardship Wizard, DMPOnline, DMP Tool, and RDMO, the maDMPs API WG focuses on standardizing the technical integration, ensuring seamless exchange, automation, and validation of information across systems.

The Active Data Management Plans Interest Group (IG) is a driving force behind shaping the work of the DMP-related Working Groups (WGs). It serves as a forum for identifying emerging needs and defining the requirements for active, monitorable DMPs that can evolve throughout the research lifecycle. That way, the IG ensures that DMPs remain adaptable and relevant across diverse research contexts while guiding the development of key frameworks and specifications.

Short Group Status

The Active Data Management Plans Interest Group (IG) was established in 2017 to discuss requirements and shape priorities for evolving, monitorable DMPs. It remains active, serving as a forum for identifying emerging challenges and informing the work of related WGs.

The DMP Common Standards Working Group (WG), established in 2019, is currently in its maintenance phase. It focuses on monitoring and supporting the adoption of its widely used application profile for maDMPs, ensuring ongoing relevance and interoperability across platforms such as ARGOS, DMPTool, and RDMO.

The maDMPs API Working Group (RDA TIGER) was launched in 2024 and is in an active development phase. It is defining API specifications and technical requirements to integrate maDMPs into research workflows. Initial deliverables are expected by P25, reflecting progress made through community engagement and technical prototyping.

Together, these groups address standards, technical solutions, and community needs, advancing global alignment in research data management practices.
