This joint session brings together the Active Data Management Plans IG, dedicated to evolving and monitoring DMP practices, and the DMP Common Standards WG, focused on harmonisation and interoperability across platforms. Most importantly, it introduces the forthcoming RDA Working Group on APIs for machine-actionable DMPs (maDMPs), under development with the support of the RDA TIGER, which aims to set a global standard for streamlined, automated, and interoperable DMP solutions.

The session builds on the longstanding commitment of RDA members, as expressed in the Salzburg Manifesto, and integrates insights from local initiatives, such as the Open Science Trails project, which enhances plan-track-assess pathways within the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC).

Our aim is to:

  1. Introduce the new WG on APIs for maDMPs that is currently being established with the support of the RDA TIGER.
  2. Showcase innovations in maDMPs and progress towards the realisation of the Salzburg Manifesto through presentations of project results.
  3. Foster global collaboration by engaging in discussions with the RDA community to further co-design, deliver and support the commons across regions.
  4. Chart a pathway forward by identifying key priorities, actions, and collaborations to advance maDMP adoption, innovation, and global alignment.

Thus, the session will highlight:

  • New developments on the adoption and maintenance of the DMP Common Standard for enhanced interoperability.
  • Best practices across regions, such as the use of DMP IDs, aligning DMPs with FAIR principles, and fostering integration with broader EOSC services.
  • The maDMP API WG’s scope and objectives to developing a universal API specification, enabling seamless integration of maDMPs with RDM workflows.
  • Co-creation and collaboration into identifying requirements to improve technical interoperability.

Target audience

This session is relevant to anyone who might benefit from adopting the concept of machine actionable data management plans in their everyday work. This could include:

  • researchers, to enhance the rigor and transparency of their work, potentially leading to increased credibility and impact of their research outcomes.
  • repository managers, to enhance repository capabilities attracting more researchers to deposit their data, thereby enriching the repository’s content and fostering collaborations.
  • service providers, shaping the standards and demonstrating their commitment to advancing research data management practices by enabling machine actionability.
  • policy makers, to ensure that regulations and guidelines are well-informed, leading to more effective and feasible policies for managing research data.
  • research support staff, to enhance their support services, contributing to the overall improvement of research data management practices in their institutions.

While we are looking for people who could directly adopt our results, we are also looking for generally interested people who can advise and test assumptions and processes.

Group Activities and Scope

This is a joint session between:

  • Active Data Management Plans IG that acts as a nucleus for discussing requirements for and identifying developments needed to support active (i.e. able to evolve and be monitored) data management planning.
  • DMP Common Standards WG that realizes the vision of DMPs being fully integrated into the systems and workflows of the wider research data management environment, through the development of a common data model, vocabularies and reference implementations in popular formats, such as JSON, XML, RDF, etc.
  • The new maDMPs API WG (RDA TIGER) that focuses on defining the API specification and technical requirements that will ensure maDMPs are interoperable, automated and integrated within existing research workflows.

Both the maDMPs API WG and the DMP Common Standards WG complement each other’s activities by providing input that shapes the implementation and adoption of maDMPs across diverse settings and stakeholders. While the DMP Common Standards WG has developed an application profile to make traditional DMPs machine-actionable, adopted by major platforms like ARGOS, DAMAP, Data Stewardship Wizard, DMPOnline, DMPTool, and RDMO, the maDMPs API WG focuses on standardizing the technical integration, ensuring seamless exchange, automation, and validation of information across systems.

Overall, the Active Data Management Plans Interest Group (IG) is a driving force behind shaping the work of the DMP-related Working Groups (WGs). It serves as a forum for identifying emerging needs and defining the requirements for active, monitorable DMPs that can evolve throughout the research lifecycle. That way, the IG ensures that DMPs remain adaptable and relevant across diverse research contexts while guiding the development of key frameworks and specifications.

Short Group Status

The Active Data Management Plans Interest Group (IG) was established in 2017 to discuss requirements and shape priorities for evolving, monitorable DMPs. It remains active, serving as a forum for identifying emerging challenges and informing the work of related WGs.

The DMP Common Standards Working Group (WG), established in 2019, is currently in its maintenance phase. It focuses on monitoring and supporting the adoption of its widely used application profile for maDMPs, ensuring ongoing relevance and interoperability across platforms such as ARGOS, DAMAP, DSW, DMPOnline, DMPTool, and RDMO.

The maDMPs API Working Group (RDA TIGER) was launched in 2024 and is in an active development phase. It is defining API specifications and technical requirements to integrate maDMPs into research workflows. Initial deliverables are expected by P25, reflecting progress made through community engagement and technical prototyping.

Together, these groups address standards, technical solutions, and community needs, advancing global alignment in research data management practices.
