Dr. Tim Vines is a researcher, journal manager, managing editor, and entrepreneur. He is the former Managing Editor of the journal Molecular Ecology. Following a PhD and post-doctoral work in ecology, he moved into scientific publishing. He has written numerous scholarly articles on peer review and data sharing, including two pieces in Nature and a widely cited article in Current Biology. He left his role at Molecular Ecology to set up a company called Axios Review that provided a brokerage service between authors and journals, so that authors could submit their work to a journal that actively wanted the paper. He is currently working on a Sloan-funded initiative called DataSeer, which is a tool for journals (and funders) to search articles for references to datasets and thereby promote their deposition in open source databases. Though British, he is based in Vancouver, Canada.
