Paul Millar

Paul received his PhD from the University of Glasgow in 2000.  He then   
researched data placement strategies in the emerging field of grid computing   
for CERN’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and then worked on physics metadata   
management across the LHC experiments.

In 2007, he joined Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY) as a senior   
developer on dCache, an open-source storage management system used worldwide   
for large-scale scientific data. He helped design and implement key features,   
working closely with researchers, and contributed to widely adopted standards   
for data transfer, storage accounting, and authentication/authorisation.

Paul has led multiple working groups and played key roles in EU-funded data   
management projects, including INDIGO-DataGrid, Extreme Data Cloud (XDC), and   
interTwin. He served as Technical Director of the ExPaNDS project, represented   
PaNOSC in EOSC-Future, and co-leads the Technical Advisory Board of the   
DAPHNE4NFDI project.

Since 2023, Paul has been spokesperson for LEAPS Working Group 3 on IT,   
coordinating activities across European X-ray facilities and co-organising   
events such as the FAIR data for machine learning workshop with LENS. He also   
co-leads OSCARS Work Package 2 on enabling composability of services across the   
five research clusters, part of the bridge connecting scientists to EOSC.

He continues his focus on metadata, data management, and IT for photon and neutron
facilities within the DAPHNE4NFDI 2 project, while also engaging with the HEP
community through PUNCH4NFDI 2 project.
