The Protein Data Bank (PDB) was established in 1971 as the first open-access digital data resource in biology, which provides public access to hundreds of thousands of experimentally-determined and expertly-biocurated 3D structures of biological macromolecules (including both proteins and nucleic acids), which are housed in the PDB Archive. This archive is jointly managed by the partners of the Worldwide PDB (wwPDB), which is comprised of the RCSB PDB (U.S.), PDBe (Europe), PDBj (Japan), BMRB (U.S./Japan), and EMDB (Europe). The Research Collaboratory for Structural Bioinformatics PDB (RCSB PDB) web portal at RCSB.org provides not only access to the contents of the PDB archive with no limitations on usage, but also a rich collection of tools and features that can be used to search, browse, analyze, and visualize the available set of structural data in the archive.
