IDW 2021 Postponed until June 2022

The founding organisations and the local hosts announce that International Data Week will be postponed to 20-23 June 2022 for the main conference. Associated events will take place in the period 18-26 June 2022. The conference will be a hybrid format with both in-person and virtual participation.

This decision was made in response to the continuing global COVID-19 crisis and its aftermath. In order to bring the international data community together and to ensure that the event would have the maximum impact for our hosts in Korea and internationally, having a significant in-person presence was an important element which would not have been possible in November 2021. Although we are keen to maximise the opportunity for participants to meet in Seoul, the organisers will ensure that the facility for high quality virtual participation remains.

Announcements will be made in due course about the arrangements for IDW 2022 and for some virtual events still scheduled for November 2021. CODATA and WDS will communicate shortly with those people who had already proposed sessions for SciDataCon. RDA will host a global 8-day virtual plenary meeting during the period from 3-18 November 2021 and will share more details on that event in the coming days.

We look forward to seeing you - hopefully in person - in Seoul in June 2022.

Virtual Plenary 17 – Recordings and Plenary Report Available to Public

RDA is pleased to announce that sessions recorded at Virtual Plenary 17 (VP17) are now available on the RDA website. To access these recordings, visit the “Programme” page for VP17. For those who did not have an opportunity to attend, these recordings provide some insight on the conversations and work taking place among the members of RDA.

Additional context may be helpful as well by reading the summaries of each day’s activities during the week compiled into a final report and updated with further information and links to presentations and recordings.

RDA COVID-19 Ethical and Legal Working Group Paper Published in Journal of Human Genetics

This paper, titled 'International Transfers of Personal Data for Health Research following Schrems II: A problem in need of a solution' considers the effects of the Court of Justice of the European Union’s Schrems II decision — on Facebook’s transfers of personal data (PD) from the EU to the US — on the international exchange of PD for health research, specifically in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

CODATA-RDA Schools for Research Data Science in South Africa in Process

The CODATA-RDA Schools for Research Data Science is underway, running from 3 May through 9 July in South Africa.  Participants from more than 15 countries are completing a curriculum comprising ten themes.

While the international, collective ability to create, share, and analyse vast quantities of data is profound, there remains a shortage of individuals skilled in Research Data Science worldwide, which limits this transformative effect. However, with the appropriate data training, the ‘Data Revolution’ offers great opportunities for students and professionals with modern data skills - for instance, when entering a job market where these skills are in demand or conducting research. The CODATA-RDA School for Research Data Science brings these concepts and tools to communities that may not have been introduced to the wide range of open resources currently available.

Data Versioning – An Epic Chapter of a Long Story

This article, published in the ARDC Newsletter, discusses a framework used by librarians for cataloguing books and how it is shedding light on how researchers can precisely identify the digital dataset that underpins their work. The article features RDA members Jens Klump, Lesley Wyborn and Mingfang Wu, and references the paper titled Versioning data is about more than revisions: A conceptual framework and proposed principles, which was published in Data Science Journal in March 2021.

Call for Applications to Host International Data Week (IDW) 2025

Applications are now being accepted to host International Data Week 2025. IDW is a global and inclusive event organised by the Committee on Data (CODATA) and the World Data System (WDS) of the International Science Council (ISC), and the Research Data Alliance (RDA). It brings together data scientists, researchers, industry leaders, entrepreneurs, policymakers, and data stewards from disciplines across the globe to explore how best to exploit the data revolution to improve science and society through data-driven discovery and innovation. IDW combines the RDA Plenary Meeting, the bi-annual meeting of this international member organisation working to develop and support global infrastructure facilitating data sharing and reuse, and SciDataCon, the scientific conference addressing the frontiers of data in research organised by CODATA and WDS. To learn more about the application process and previous and upcoming International Data Week editions, visit

International Materials Resource Registries Working Group Issues Final Report and Recommendations

In this final report, the group presented the results of its successful piloting of a registry federation for materials science data discovery. In particular, the group laid out a blueprint for creating such a federation that is capable of amassing a global view of all available materials science data, and they enumerated the requirements on the standards that make the registries interoperable within the federation. They also summarized how they leveraged the existing Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH) for metadata exchange and Extensible Markup Language (XML) to define their schema, incorporating both generic and materials science-specific metadata.  The pilot registry federation currently holds more than 360 resource description records distributed across two registry instances.

Members in the RDA community are encouraged to review this group's Final Report and Recommendations and provide feedback by 25 June.
