Collaborative session notes: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1biV_1HT9HcDX1sqZW10JFmpPjmThy6DwQHDT6aBRynU/edit?usp=sharing

  1. To state the founding mission of the WG

  2. To outline the WG’s strategy to achieve interoperability between parameter descriptions

  3. To introduce to the first two tasks of the WG

  4. To invite others to participate in the effort, explaining how to do so

Meeting agenda:
  • Gwenaelle Moncoiffe: Overview presentation - on case statement & work done (15 min)

  • Anusuriya Devaraju: Introducing task 1: Collection of User stories(10 min)

  • Barbara Magagna: Introducing task 2: Collection of Semantic representations (15 min)

  • Nicola Fiore: EcoPortal as a collaborative terminology platform for the WG (10 min)

  • Open/structured discussion, moderated by Barbara Magagna (30 min):

    • input for user stories

    • collection of existing surveys about relevant terminologies

    • strategy for collection of semantic representations

  • John Graybeal: Conclusions about next steps (10 min)

Target Audience:

Data managers, data scientists, informaticians, or anyone seeking to increase the interoperability of their data about environmental science phenomena.

  • For those not familiar with the technologies behind interoperability and linked data, this session will offer a rapid introduction to ongoing work on the issue

  • For those fluent in semantic technology and linked open data, the session will 1) describe a multi-stakeholder interoperability framework which spans the semantic gradient and 2) describe how to link their own resources into the initiative

Group chair serving as contact person:
Brief introduction describing the activities and scope of the group:

The objective of the group is to improve research data interoperability through the harmonization of observable property descriptions with a community agreed terminology framework based on existing approaches and terminologies.

The WG activities will result into a review and synthesis paper on existing observation-centric semantic models based on identified evaluation metrics/criteria but also with guidance and best practices in applying semantic web technology to describe variable names (observable properties).

Short Group Status:

Applying for becoming an officially endorsed Working Group via submitting the case statement https://www.rd-alliance.org/sites/default/files/case_statement/I-ADOPT%20WG%20case%20statement.pdf. The group session is thought to be the Kick-off for the WG. This collaboration has already been active together since January 2018 (see https://drive.google.com/open?id=1eZ2ypn2Q1SRqSZYOBiVMob3ZgkKG667e).
