IG Agricultural Data Interoperability 2

Date & Time: BREAKOUT3 Monday 22 Sept 2014, 15.30 – 17.00

Agricultural Data Interest Group Chairs: Imma Subirats, UNFAO, Rome and Devika Madalli, India

The Agricultural Data Interest Group (ADIG) is a domain oriented interest group to work on all issues related to data important for the development of global agriculture. The interest group aims to represent all stakeholders producing, managing, aggregating, sharing and consuming data for agricultural research and innovation.

Efforts will be made to get an active representation of the major international institutions, which work on agricultural research and innovation. It will take stock of existing problems and experiences and aims to pave the way for a number of domain specific working groups to make precise proposals for solution in specific area. This interest group will help to promote good practices in the research domain: data sharing policies, data management plan, data interoperability.

Till P4

The Agricultural Data Interest Group was initiated at Plenary 1 at RDA meeting held at Gothenburg, Sweden. ADIG proposed and supports the Wheat Data Interoperability Working Group that aims to provide a common framework for describing, representing linking and publishing wheat data with respect to open standards. Such a framework will promote and sustain wheat data sharing, reusability and operability.

Specifying the wheat linked data framework will require answering many questions, including which (minimal) metadata to describe which type of data; which vocabularies/ontologies/formats; and which good practices to be adopted. Mainly based on the needs of the Wheat Initiative Information System (WheatIS) in terms of functionalities and data types, the Agricultural Research Interest Group and the proposed Working Group will identify relevant use cases in order to produce a "cookbook" on how to produce "wheat data" that are easily shareable, reusable and interoperable.

ADIG at RDA Plenary4

The objective of the proposed ADIG meeting at RDA P4 is to solicit and involve the various stakeholders dealing with agricultural data in any way including major international institutions that work on agricultural research and innovation worldwide and address issues related to data that are important to the development of global agriculture. The group intends to bring together leaders and stakeholders in agricultural data initiatives to work towards feasible services in a technology-independent and standards-compliant platform for worldwide use by communities in agricultural sectors, and to represent all stakeholders producing, managing, aggregating, sharing and consuming data for agricultural research and innovation. The session is open to all. The chairs solicit participation of agricultural scientists including data managers, curators, researchers and scientists, information managers, domain specific information system managers and providers but not limited to the mentioned roles.

The IGAD meeting will be held in two sessions:
