A short introduction describing the activities and the scope of the group:

The goals of the VSIG are to provide a forum for discussion, and potential harmonization of services that provide semantic resources to suppport research data services, particularly term-definition style vocabularies and glossaries.

The group was formed 2 years ago, and had regular (bi-weekly) teleconferences for the first 18 months and big turnouts at f2f meetings at the RDA plenaries. The group leadership was based largely in the Earth and Environmental Sciences.

There had been some outreach to the life-sciences, particularly during the group's formation, though subsequence engagement was weak.

The last formal meetings of VSIG were at the Denver plenary, September 2016.

At that meeting there was a great turnout and vigorous discussion around the two activity areas:
1. standardizaing a SKO API for vocabulary services
2. governance arrangements and workflows

There was no formal meeting in Barcelona, but VSIG was represented at a pre-meeting of the Semantic Interest Group convened by EUDAT. Following this the VSIG has been re-booted as the Vocabulary and Semantic Services Interest Group (VSSIG) with a modified scope and new co-chairs replacing two of the original leadership, and more support from key initiatives and organizations. 'Vocabularies' (term-definition style) are just one point on the spectrum of semantics resources, and there is increasing interest in managing vocabularies in the context of a more general treatment of vocabularies and ontologies.
