The evolving certification landscape
A short introduction describing the activities and the scope of the group:
The RDA/WDS Certification of Digital Repositories IG is a forum which brings together the stakeholders interested in certification of data repositories. Data repositories managers, science publishers, research funders, scientists and experts discuss the issues related to certification within the IG and provide guidance and recommendations to allow the effective implementation of certification of digital repositories on a national, European and global level.

This meeting will endeavour to achieve the following objectives:
To provide updates to RDA participants on RDA activities linked to this IG (WDS/RDA Assessment of Data Fitness for Use WG) and activities following up on previous RDA work in continuous development(DSA-WDS Core Trustworthy Data Repositories requirements WG)
To propose new activities and initiate a dialogue with existing RDA Groups, including expanding the remit of the IG towards certifications of other data services and e.g. software.
The session in Montreal will cover three current topics, that will be introduced by one or two speakers, followed by time for discussion with the audience. Each slot will take 30 minutes.
I. Relationship between CoreTrustSeal and ISO 16363 certifications:
With the recent and long awaited certification of PTAB as an auditing body for the ISO16363:2012 standard, this certification is now finally operational. Although it might seem as if the CoreTrustSeal core-level certification promoted by the World Data System and Data Seal of Approval is competing with the formal-level ISO certifications, the reality is that they form a continuum with the core-level being the first step towards the extended-level to the formal-level certifications. This development is very relevant for the IG audience and we would like to initiate a dialogue between the PTAB and CoreTrustSeal to reflect on the relationship between the two.
Bob Downs (PTAB): Improving a Trustworthy Data Repository with ISO 16363 (see presentation below)
Mustapha Mokrane (CoreTrustSeal): CoreTrustSeal: Getting started as a Trustworthy Data Repository (see presentation below)
II. A software sustainability seal of approval
Would it be feasible to develop a CoreTrustSeal for software, that contributes to the sustainability of software used in science. Questions arise like: what is “good” software and how do we measure this? How can we create good proxy criteria? Could we define metrics for assessment?
Neil Chue Hong (SSI) - Where might software fit with CoreTrustSeal? (presentation see below)
III. Data fitness for use:
The increasing availability of research data and its evolving role as a first class scientific output in the scholarly communication requires a better understanding of and the possibility to assess data quality, which in turn can be described as conformance of data properties to data usability or fitness for use. This slot will be dedicated to present and discuss the results of the Data fitness WG so far, with a special focus on possibilities for the operationalisation of the concept (a CoreTrustSeal for data?).
