Meeting title:

Building Bridges: Multiple Reflections on Ethical Concerns and Next Steps for ESAD

A short introduction describing the activities and the scope of the group:

The ESAD started as a BoF at the Third Plenary in Dublin, Ireland. Formally established as an IG in 2015, ESAD aims to discuss ethical and social concerns that might result from archiving, sharing and reusing research data. During this period, the group has organized teleconferences and meetings at RDA plenaries. During P8 in Denver, the IG co-sponsored a session on “"Responsible Sharing of Confidential Research Data" with the Privacy Implications of Research Data Sets IG. At the 9th RDA meeting in Barcelona, the group co-sponsored a session in data rescue rather than having our own meeting.

At the 10th plenary, the ESAD plans to hold a session to identify cross cutting ethical concerns with other RDA groups and the collection of use cases from diverse domains about ethical concerns and potential solutions. On a meta level, the group will also discuss the role of ESAD in RDA, whether that is the creation of data ethicists that act as ambassadors in other groups or continuing the practice of shared meetings. We will also focus on next steps for ESAD as a mechanism to train others on ethical decision making.
