IG Data Foundations and Terminology RDA 9th Plenary meeting

Meeting title

Data Foundations and Terminology IG Meeting

Short introduction describing the activities and the scope of the group:

Agreed upon terminology, the meaning of terms used in discussion, remains an important aspect of all RDA group work especially as RDA groups mature and common interests emerge. The DFT IG mission remains to continue the discussion initiated by the RDA DFT WG and to support continuing RDA efforts elaborate the basic data concepts within a useful framework that documents data vocabularies. A key aspect of the work is to support broader model and vocabulary agreements within and across RDA WGs and IGs along with their representative communities and stakeholders.

Meeting objectives

This session will help continue the synchronization of RDA conceptualization and enable better understanding within and between RDA groups and provide updates on the term tool operation and functionality.
Further, it will allow newer groups to present their vocabularies and issues to the group and discuss relations to other groups and their definitions,
In addition. improvements in the depth of definitions will be discussed to support better synchronize conceptualization, enable better understanding within and between communities and
stimulate tool building and terminological services such as mapping between vocabularies and finding similar terms.
Among the issues under discussion is to :
Define relations between terms.
How to assign PIDs to every individual definition so that linking between different vocabularies is possible.
How to handle data definition mutability as concepts change over time, including marking definitions or terms as deprecated and versioning of stable snapshots of the DFT vocabulary set. More distinctions for the related concepts of versions, copies and replicas was discussed at the recent Chairs meeting at NIST.
How to handle similarity between terms: sometimes definitions are very close to each other but still not the same? Work with relations from SKOS will be discussed.
How to make links between definitions?
Can we translate terms and their definitions to other languages then English?
How to add more semantics to metadata as discussed at the recent Chairs meeting at NIST.
