Several RDA working groups have been active in developing frameworks for specifying information about the continuum of tools we use for performing research, from samples to resources to instruments to facilities to organizations. As these frameworks are implemented, there arise questions about specifications at the fuzzy borders between things. What qualifies as an instrument vs. a facility, for example? There are different perspectives based on one’s disciplinary field, and questions abound as to what persistent identifiers to use, particularly in the overlap spaces.
In this working session, we will be bringing together people who have been involved in developing and implementing information frameworks along the tools continuum, as well as PID providers, facilities managers, a variety of research disciplines, and policy folks, to appreciate and discuss this messy continuum. Instead of formal presentations, the session will be a facilitated conversation, including breakout groups.
In preparation for the session, we are proposing to focus the conversation and engage active communities in drafting a working document summarizing the current state of play for persistent identifiers in the tools continuum, that incorporates points from related RDA working groups (PIDs in Tools, PIDInst, PID-IG), community gatherings (unconference session at PIDFest 2024, the FAIR for Facilities events in 2023-24), as well as ORCID work on Research Resources, RRIDs, IGSN, ROR specs, implementation work at US National Labs.
Our goal is to determine what is missing, focus on the top 2 questions that if answered would help to foster understanding and support broader implementation of persistent identifiers along the tools continuum, and determine whether a useful next step is spinning up an RDA working group to gather community to answer those questions.
