    Dear All,
Here is summary of our Quality of Urban Life session we held at the 8th RDA Plenary in Denver. Special thanks to Demetris Avraam for putting this together.
8th RDA Plenary Meeting, Denver, Colorado
    Quality of Urban Life IG
During the 8th Plenary Meeting of RDA last September in Denver the Quality of Urban Life IG held a session to discuss the scope of the group and to look at other opportunities to collaborate more broadly and share experience in the context of urban informatics and urban data. Chris Pettit introduced the aim of the group which is the focus on identifying a minimum set of interoperable open access datasets across the social, environmental, economic and cultural domains that can be used to build comparable indicators (based on the ISO37120 standard) of Urban Quality of Life in a global setting. Following the introduction, four projects have been presented:
    1. Visualising City Change
Chris Pettit, from University of New South Wales, introduced the Smart Cities Research Cluster which promotes the efficient design, planning and delivery of urban environments and services through the use of spatially integrated information and communication technology and he presented the City Dashboard which gives information for the weather, air quality, trains and ferries networks and live traffic cameras from the city of Sydney and the CityViz, a data visualisation and analytics initiative capitalising on the unique access to urban big data for Sydney, and he demonstrated visualisations of cycling data.
    2. Urban Analytics Data Infrastructure
Jane Hunter, from the University of Queensland, presented the Urban Analytics Data Infrastructure, a digital data infrastructure that enables the integration, harmonisation, connectivity and scalability of multi-source urban datasets. The aim of this project is the development of new ontological frameworks and an urban data dictionary to underpin the next generation of data driven modelling and decision-support tools to enable smart, productive and resilient cities.
    3. The Spatial Urban Data System
Andrew McHugh, from University of Glasgow, presented the Urban Big Data Centre, a UK-based service which provides data services and support for researchers who want to use big data to address a range of local or global urban challenges. Andrew introduced the Spatial Urban Data System a developing database that aims to provide data of small-area estimates of a wide variety of economic, social, built environment and physical indicators in UK urban areas.
    4. Polis Gnosis
Mark Fox, from University of Toronto, presented the PolisGnosis Project which aims to provide tools to automate the longitudinal and transversal analysis of cities performance and determine the root causes of differences, he suggested the use of a Global Urban Data Repository, a single repository in which all urban data can be deposited, searched and retrieved and he discussed ISO JTC 1 WG 1 Smart Cities standards.
